Mary Puppins - Practically Pawfect!

Pet care experience

In every job that must be done, there is an element of fun. There's nothing better than coming home to my second job. I simply enjoy the pleasure of having a four legged friend around the house that I can care for and spoil as if they were my own! I am a confident, gentle, and nurturing dog-lover through and through and you can rest easy knowing your dog will have the best time with me in my home. I live a block away from the beach and love walking it, so if your pooch stays with me, you can be certain they will get plenty of exercise (if that's what you both want, of course)! I am also a rookie gardener, do a lot of DIY projects, and as such spend a lot of time outside with my little projects, so dogs will be able to roam and explore comfortably in my fenced in back yard where there's plenty to sniff and a plethora of lizards to chase (but never catch!). If relaxing inside is more up their ally, they can make themselves at home in my humble abode. I try my best to mimick their lifestyles and routines so that they're comfortable and at ease while you're away. I've been told I'm a dog whisperer - which as corny as it sounds, I honestly do hope and believe is true! I get the feeling dogs are instinctively drawn to and very comfortable with me. I think much of that may be attributed to working with and training horses for 10+ years through high school and college (they're just like dogs but in a 2,000 lb body!). I am quick to pick up what the animal is about and what makes him or her wag their tail. In turn, I know exactly what it is they need to be their best self with patience, consistency, and just the right amount of affection. I strive to find alternative ways to exercise - it's a good thing walking dogs qualifies as such! I completely understand that some dogs feel more comfortable in their own home rather than in a strangers', so I am happy to offer them the convenience of being loved and spoiled at home if the opportunity is a good fit. If so, your dog will be seen at least twice a day, at least 30 minutes each visit. If my office is close enough to your home, I'll visit/walk/let out during my lunch break as well. P.S. I am willing to negotiate rates and schedules under certain circumstances, so please don't hesitate to ask! Although Rover has come a long way in the years I've been on here, they're still working on showing the client all of the dog sitter's flexibility.

Ulricke is the best! She obviously is a dog lover...it shows in all she does. I’ll not hesitate to use her again and have already recommended her to a friend. Thanks again, Ulricke!

Ulrike was great with our big Golden, Bodhi! We travelled on tough hours and it was a pleasure to get everything set up for the stay. Highly recommend and I know Bodhi is looking forward to his next stay!

About my yard: I have an adorable, decent size, fenced in back yard. It's full of fruit trees (tangerine, fig and avocado), a veggie garden that is constantly testing my green thumb, a front patio as well as a back patio. Dogs love coming over to smell all the interesting nooks and crannies of the garden, watch squirrels, chase lizards and occasionally get excited by a neighborhood cat passing through. My experience administering medication: I've nursed several animal types (dogs, cats, birds, horses) to health and have seen many of the unpleasantries that come along with age and sickness. Once I can put my heart ache aside, there isn't much that I am afraid of nor uncomfortable with doing - from giving an injection to getting a stubborn 2,000lb horse to take his meds orally with a large syringe. I'm also happy to bend over backwards to administer the medicine as comfortably and stress free to the pet as possible, even if it means grinding up a pill, mixing it with something tasty, and spoon feeding them until it's all gone. My Dog / Pet History: I travel enough (for both work and personal) that it's not possible for me to have a dog of my own. I miss having a pet so badly, I frequently volunteer to sit my friends' dogs when I get the chance (even if it only fills the void temporarily), so why not get the pleasure of watching other peoples' canine-companions while I'm at it? I've been doing "professional" dog-sitting on Rover for almost five years and I am proud to be one of the first and original Rover sitters at the beaches. I have been around different types of animals my whole life and truly love them ALL - dogs, cats, birds, fish, horses, ducks, farm animals and wild life (I was born and raised in South Africa). What can I say? I have natural affinity for animals and assuring their happiness. I've even had the opportunity to raise 11 Pekin ducklings, all of which grew into healthy and happy ducks that retired in a family's back yard pond. I've been around dogs my entire life, sometimes up to 3 or 4 at a time in the house! I like to think I have a sincere connection with dogs and am always able to figure out just what they need - whether it's a little or a lot! I'm often times able to help friends and family with training their dogs (it's a lot simpler than it seems if you know how to think on the dog's level).

I have yet to meet a breed I don't like yet! I believe every dog has potential to be a great dog, it all has to do with how they were raised and their owner. I'm pretty easy going, so regardless of the answers, I just think it's important to know if the dog has any health issues, is neutered/fixed, and what their temperament is like with other dogs. As a bonus, it helps to know where their favorite spot is to be scratched. Please note I will only sit two dogs at a time from the same owner, otherwise it’s only one dog at a time. While my home is very dog friendly and welcomes all dogs, it is an apartment and can be a bit small for two larger breeds concurrently. Although last minute bookings don’t always don’t allow the opportunity, I ask that all four legged guests please be recently groomed and have a good shedding before staying with me on their mini vacation. I do offer and enjoy giving dog baths if timing permits, but please be aware that an additional grooming and/or cleaning fee may apply if excessive shedding occurs in my home.

A typical day

Here's where we'll take our walks: As far as using the bathroom goes, dogs are welcome to use my fenced in yard. As far as exercise goes, I live a block from the beach and less than a mile (15 min walk) from Jack Russel Park, where there is a great track to walk and lots of interesting spots for the pooch to sniff out! And if your pooch is a member of Brewhound - I'll be more than happy to take them for a visit! If there isn't enough time to fit a park visit in, the beach and/or First Street (sidewalks on both sides of the street) are a definite. Your dog's sleeping arrangement: Wherever is most comfortable. Your dog's bed/crate/blanket are great to have around, but trust that I will take full advantage of having them sleep on the bed with me if that's what makes them feel at home - since that is how I feel most at home. Time I'll spend with your dog: Quite a bit. Like I said, your dog is my dog! I'm mostly taking advantage of the fact that I have a dog's company, so whether it's taking a nap on the couch, going for a walk on the beach, hanging out in the garden or cuddling on the bed at night, you can be certain they'll get lots of attention. At a minimum, I can guarantee 3 hours of loving human company a day (and that doesn't include at night when we're sleeping at home) but that's just in a worst case scenario.

I work a typical 9-5 job but my schedule is very flexible and often go home for lunch. I'll be sure to make this effort if your pooch is with me during the weekend. As for weekends, I'm a home body so I'll be in and out of the house all day either working in the garden or running quick errands. Regardless of the day of the week, rest assured that when I am home, your dog will be loved and cared for in just the way they need.
