I own two dogs (medium and large sized). I frequently play with them depending on their preferred style of play - e.g. chasing laser or obeying commands for treats. I walk my dogs and pick up after them 4 times a day. I also have experience caring for a special-needs dog due to disk herniation - I provided frequent potty breaks (5-6 times/day) with bladder assistance. I played with him, allowed time to rest, provided fresh water/food, and massaged and moved his affected hind legs. The dog was eventually able to regain its ability to walk! I also provided dog-sitting to my family a one week's increment. During this time, I ensured they were walked, fed, and played with daily and frequently enough to minimize inactivity.
