Dogs are my therapy.

Pet care experience

My name is Terra (TJ) and there hasn't been a day in my life without a dog. Since I was born, there has always been a dog or cat by my side and they've always been my best friends. I've learned in my life that the love you put out is the love you'll get back especially with animals. My experience level has spanned from first meeting to last days. Special instructions or ways to love is nothing new to me, so there's really nothing I haven't seen or experienced with my family with pets and ones that happened to be best friends. I look forward to meeting everyone's best friends! As of 9/16/22, I work Monday-Friday 8-5. If I'm house/dog-sitting at your residence, all other time will be spent at your home unless I state otherwise. I do have Asthma and allergies that make me sensitive to excessive urine smell, so if there is a history of peeing inside or not being fully potty-pad trained, I would be unable to watch your fur babies. Please take that into consideration, I will not accept the booking if I react to it during a meet and greet. Also, I don't do raw meat or heavy preparation for meals or high maintenance grooming, sorry!

I wasn’t going to leave a review, but as I have told more friends of my Rover experience, they have convinced me that I am doing more of a disservice to others by keeping silent. I hired Terra J for dogsitting in my home from 10/02/22 to 10/22/2022. We had a meet and greet on 9/23/22, during which I told her of different characteristics with my dog’s potty habits, raw fed diet, and the importance of sweeping daily with a dry dust mop and brushing my long-haired dog daily for about 5 minutes max to prevent hair tangles. Terra was agreeable to our needs, but she did not write down any notes to help her remember information. Instead, she asked me to write down every detail into the Rover app or send to her by e-mail. In e-mail, I provided my neighbor’s name and phone number in case she had trouble with the exterior door lock, and I gave her my emergency point of contact. During my business trip, I checked in on Terra by phone on several days, and she complained that my dog was peeing and pooping on the floor all over the place. For me, incidents on the floor were rare – I took my dog out at least 5 times a day and she is potty pad trained. I told Terra that I thought my dog was testing her boundaries, and suggested that she kennel my dog for a couple of days, only letting her out for meals, potty breaks, and play time, and after a couple of days she should be better behaved. The incidents continued, Terra complained that she was mopping the floors constantly to clean up urine, and when I returned home, my neighbor said Terra told her she thinks it is mean to kennel a dog to correct behavior. During the meet and greet, I mentioned that my dog gets excited when I return home and like many dogs do, she sometimes has a little bit of urine dribble when she gets excited. I have a waterproof furniture cover over my leather recliner and told her that when I leave the home, I put a potty pad on the seat so if she is on it and stands up when I put the key in the door, the dribble will get on the pad instead of on the cover or leather. During one of my phone check-ins, Terra said my dog keeps peeing on the leather and she had to clean it. I asked if she had put a potty pad down, and she had not. Terra also said she had shampooed two chairs in my living room two times. I had left the SpotBot out in case there was an accident on the bedroom carpet, which happens on occasion if I sleep late and the potty pad has already been soiled. Two days before I left, I cleaned the chairs to remove dirty paw prints – my dog had NEVER peed on the furniture before! Terra said she “thought” my dog had peed on the chairs. I asked if she saw my dog pee on them – she had not. She also did not send me any pics of what she thought were pee spots. Two pillows on the chairs also look like they were “cleaned”. The gold colored stripes have bled onto the cream background – and inside the lining of the pillow covers are labels that clearly say “Dry clean only”!!! I never asked Terra to clean my upholstery and she did not ask for permission. Before I left, I had a rack of pork ribs cut into 1-inch strips and individually frozen and chicken drumsticks cut in half in the fridge, so all Terra had to do was give one piece to my dog for a meal. I also had a 4-lb. bag of drumsticks in the freezer, and a cookie jar full of dehydrated raw food blend that only required hot water to rehydrate before serving (instructions taped to a bag of same food on top of the cookie jar. On 10/13/2022, I checked in with Terra, and asked how she was doing on food – did she want me to order more meat for delivery, or did she want to finish out with the dehydrated food? She said to go ahead and order more pork and chicken – so I placed an Instacart order for 3 6-packs of drumsticks and a rack of ribs. When I returned home, I found that instead of cutting the ribs into 1-inch strips (between the rib bones like what I had left with her) – Terra cut them into little 1-inch cubes, making each piece a potential choke hazard! Then she opened all three of the air compressed drumstick packages and she repacked them into plastic SANDWICH bags. Who does that? They were already packaged ready to freeze, and the packages did not need to be opened until each one was being used. She obviously created more work for herself by not following instructions or my examples. I did NOT tell her to do it the way she did. She turned a 2-minute task into a more than 1 hour challenge and then complained about it to my neighbor that cutting up the ribs and repacking the chicken was not what she signed up for. Well, if I had known that was how she was going to do it, I wouldn't have ordered the meat. On the evening of 10/15/2022, Terra called my neighbor on the phone while my neighbor was working, and complained for TWO HOURS about how she was constantly cleaning, how the urine odor in my apartment was overwhelming and causing her to have asthma issues, and she was so uncomfortable in my apartment. She tried to talk my neighbor into taking over the last week of Terra’s Rover contract because she couldn’t handle it any longer. NOTE: My neighbor is not on Rover and she has never had a dog. My neighbor couldn’t help because of her work schedule, but my neighbor called me by phone on Saturday night at 10 PM (in the time zone I was in), and said that my dogsitter was quitting and what did I want them to do about my dog? Terra didn’t even call me herself! She thought it was better for her to hire someone on my behalf, and then tell me about it later. Show of hands pet parents – YOU take the time to vet and hire someone to take care of your pet in your home – how many of you want that person to hire someone else to be in your home without your prior approval? Imagine how upset you would feel, and how scared you would feel for your pet knowing that all of the boarding businesses were closed for the day and there was nothing you could even do until the next morning. I called several of my friends – two had COVID and could not help, and the others were not equipped to dogsit and did not know anyone available to dogsit. As soon as Petsmart Hotel opened on Sunday morning, I was on the phone to get a reservation and had Terra deliver my dog to the closest Petsmart Hotel 4 miles away. It cost me an additional $40/day for the next week. (My friends think Rover should be paying that extra amount.) An hour after arriving at Petsmart, a hotel employee called and wanted to know if I knew what happened to my dog, who was acting skittish and every time they reached down to pet her, my dog flinched like she thought they were going to hit her. They had her report cards from prior stays, and knew this was not normal behavior for my dog. When I picked my dog up on 10/22, her report card was marked that she needed a lot of encouragement to get her to potty outside. After hearing of the "overwhelming urine odor" and it did NOT smell like urine when I left, I was concerned, so after Terra quit, on Monday morning, 10/17, I called my apartment office and requested a property inspection. The assistant manager – whom I have never met – went to my apartment. While video recording his approach to my door and walk-through, he tried the handle before trying to insert the master key – and the door was unlocked! Terra left my home, leaving my keys on my dogs leash with Petsmart Hotel, and she did not even lock my door. I don’t leave the door unlocked when I’m home. Why would I want it unsecured for ANYONE to just walk in when I’m not home? I ask you pet parents – do you want your dogsitter to leave your home unlocked and unattended? I don't know if Terra was being spiteful because she was mad or what??? But that was not cool! My apartment assistant manager did a walk-through inspection and said there was no urine smell. It smelled clean, and if I hadn’t mentioned a pet and there hadn’t been a dog crate in the living room, he would not have suspected that a dog lived there. He locked my apartment when he left. Rover customers be aware if you want your pets and belongings secure. When I arrived home on 10/22, I found one of my brother’s unwrapped Christmas present on the floor next to the front door, and another brother’s unwrapped Christmas present on a nearby table. When I left on 10/02, both of the presents were on a shelf in a closet next to the front door with other presents to be wrapped, and there was NOTHNG on that shelf that Terra needed to do her job. I don’t know why the packages needed to be taken out of the closet, but it looks suspicious. I have now been home 9 days. The apartment has been closed up since it is cold outside. This is still no urine odor in my apartment. My dog has used the potty pad two times – smack in the middle of the pad, and she has not gone potty anywhere on the floors at all. I believe if Terra had used commonly known crating to correct my dog’s behavior when it first started, she would not have had any urine problem. ** My neighbor warned me that if I give Terra a negative review, Terra will give me a worse pet parent review AND try to get me banned from using Rover again. Terra is not welcome in my home again, and I doubt that I will ever use Rover again – so go for it, Terra! During the meet and greet, you said my home was cleaner and tidier than most of the places you have dogsat – so tell everyone how bad I am and how horrible my apartment is.**

I love when there's plenty of toys so we can play anytime they're up for it! If I'm walking your dog, it will be relatively short since I have Fibromyalgia, so my endurance isn't the longest but I'll try my best.

Information Terra J. would like to know about your pet

Smaller breeds and small mixes are my favorites. Shelties, Papillons, and Miniature Poodles are what I grew up with. The attention seeking and loving ones are just what anyone needs and are welcome. Dogs with a regular feeding schedules are preferred so I don't throw off their moods or days.

A typical day

I prefer leash-trained dogs that love to play with toys at home. I LOVE to drive around so if they love the car, even better. I frequent Aftershock Espresso and they love my Rover dogs, so of course they'd get a Milkbone if their diet allows.
