I'm a kennel attendant at a vet

Pet care experience

I am currently working at a veterinary clinic as an assistant and kennel attendant. I have grown up with dogs of various sizes and am comfortable dealing with all sizes and types of dogs. I am an animal science major at UVM and have taken classes related to animal behavior and animal training so I am equipped to handle the most stubborn and nervous of dogs. I am extremely compassionate towards animals and make sure they receive the best care possible, as well as some chit chat. I like talking to the dogs and letting them know that they are loved and that my presence should be a calming one. Dogs seem to respond well to me and I love playing with them and getting all of their energy out for the day.

We have a 7-month old labradoodle pup and Taylor has been reliably helping us since we brought him home at 2 months. She is amazingly dependable and has been a lifesaver!! It is clear that she cares about the pets under her watch and that she takes her responsibility seriously. We highly recommend Taylor!

Taylor did a wonderful job caring for our precious cat who is almost 20 years old. It was even more reassuring to know that Taylor is a vet tech at a local vet office. Taylor let us know how they were doing through out our time away. She is quietly caring and compassionate and would request her again without question.

We met with Taylor three times before going on our trip, once for meet and great, once for a test walk, and our final meeting was to go over house details for the contracted house sitting (we supplemented this last meeting with 4-pages of instructions/notes for reference). Upon first meeting Taylor she had mentioned she was not in a relationship and had no real interest in one at the time. Only reason we asked was to determine if she would have any guests with her at the house during her stay, so reasonable expectations could be met. We also mentioned that we liked regular updates of Scout and pictures to see how they’re getting along. During the first 1st day of our trip, we received a one sentence update towards the end of the day stating that Scout’s walks went well that day. 2nd day, we did not receive any update until I reached out after dinner to see how things were going, received a one sentence response stating things were going well. The next morning, I get a call from my neighbors/in-laws that they didn’t see Taylor stay overnight (they did not see any car parked in front of our house) and it had been over 12 hours since they had last seen her. Additionally, her last visit had a man in tow that appeared to be a boyfriend. I reached out and received confirmation from Taylor that she indeed hadn’t been staying overnight and a man was in fact with her the previous night. She claimed he was only assisting her with dog walking and wasn’t staying in the house with her. As for not staying overnight, her explanation was that she believed staying overnight was optional…when she had been hired for House Sitting?! I expressed my concern with all of this and she carried out the next 3 days of our agreement. All the while receiving one sentence updates with minimal information. We did not receive any pictures in any of the updates for the whole duration of our trip. We also found that she left poop bags on the front steps instead of putting them in the trash bins about 20ft away (and we had shown her their location before leaving), and none of our plants had been watered as we had asked. The house was in order when we got home, but ultimately we were not impressed with the quality of care that Scout got by Taylor. Perhaps it can be chalked up to being in a new relationship, or maybe she had some misunderstandings, but I don’t believe she was fully invested in the work during the house sitting. Perhaps dog walks and visits are more up her alley, but a lot more responsibility comes with house sitting, and I wasn’t convinced that that responsibility was being met.
