I have a FENCED backyard and we do not have more than a 2 steps on our deck for senior dogs who can’t walk too much. Our backyard is regularly cleaned because I have children who play outside. I prefer crate trained dogs and while I run errands we have a gate between the mud room and kitchen which turns into a massive crate room for Archie. I will never have two dogs together in that area unless I know they get along very well without problems. I also have several gates (I put up if needed) and French doors throughout the home to keep separation if needed. If you have a crate for overnight boarding, I highly recommend you bring it with you. We have several safe toys for the dogs and I keep the kids toys in the living room which is usually put away but let me know if your pup has a tendency to get into things. We will always keep an eye out! We also have pet safe indoor plants throughout the home. If your dog has a habit of digging into pots, please let me know. My plants are important and my dog does not dig into them!
