Experienced Veterinary Technician

Pet care experience

Hello! My name is Shawn. I have been working in the veterinary field as a emergency care/ICU veterinary technician for the last 8 years. I currently work for Associates of Otolaryngology in Lone Tree. I am experienced in handling many varieties of dogs - big and small. I am trained in critical care emergencies as well as giving medical treatments such as routine medications and insulin. I have a vast knowledge of dog breeds, temperaments, and behaviors. I have fostered several dogs and I have 1 special dog of my own. Her name is Makenzie. She is a 7 year old German shepherd and we spend a lot of our time at the Cherry Creek Dog Park. I would be honored to treat your dog as my own and care for them with the guaranteed experience of a professional veterinary technician.

Shawn did a great job watching my special needs Labrador over Labour Day weekend. Penny is now 14 years old and recently started having seizures. We've been to several veterinary clinics in the past few months and we finally got her seizures under control. She's on several medications and Shawn's experience in the veterinary field is what sold me on him. He is very attentive and has a great positive attitude. He brought us his resume which I thought was very professional. He also gave us his business card; I can truly tell he cares for all pets. I got several picture and text updates over the weekend and felt completely safe leaving Penny with someone. I trust Shawn with Penny and recommend him to others. Thank you, Shawn!

I had put in a request for a house sitter, as our bulldog, Rhino, is epileptic, and has his seizures between 4 pm and 8 am. I had typed up all notes on the website, typed up a separate copy that I left on the counter with his meds, as well went over everything in person when he came over to the house a few days before we left town. Shawn was so checked out the entire time I was talking to him, which really concerned me, as I was explaining how Rhino had just gotten out of the hospital, due to having 10 seizures in one night, and his meds were somewhat altered, but would be fully documented. I let him know that medications would need to be dispensed 4 times a day, and asked to be sure that was not going to be a problem, and he said no, that he works his schedule around his dog sitting activities. Shawn accepted our request, and we restated in person that we needed him to stay overnight. Shawn was staring blankly at a spot on the wall behind my husband and I, and gave no response either way. The morning of the first day, while we were on the road, I text to let him know that the sheets and towels were clean in the main floor bedroom, and all he said was, “You guys are awesome.” While we were out of town, he would give us updates once or twice a day, so we hoped that Rhino was getting his meds all 4 times per day, but we never had confirmation. We also specifically told him that you have to monitor all food and water intake, because Rhino is not capable of stopping himself from eating and drinking while on these meds. When we got home, both kids water bowls were full almost to the top. We never do that, due to the meds issue and the fact that they both drool so much, so we constantly change the water, which again, we stated in person and in writing. I received a text at 5:13 pm on the day of our return letting me know that the kids had their meds and had gone outside. We got home at 6:45, and I walked directly to Rhino’s kennel and noticed an air freshener plugged in next to his kennel. I knew I had not left that plugged in, nor had I left it out to be used. I immediately opened the kennel, and could smell the urine in the kennel and on Rhino. My husband, Larry, put the dog bed in the washer, and we took the kids out one more time. When they came back in, I flipped Rhino over to look at his belly and he basically had diaper rash on his entire underside; belly, legs, penis, armpits, neck and chin. I ran some warm water and used a gentle soap to clean him several times. While doing this, the English Mastiff walked by, and her whole left side smelled of the same urine, and she was dry. Since Rhino had just been released from his kennel, he had not had a chance to snuggle up next to the Mastiff, which meant this was not the first time he was left in his own urine. We ended up having to bathe both dogs, plus I have been applying ointment to Rhino’s underside to clear up the rash. ( I have pictures.) Just after we had finished scrubbing him down, then covering him in ointment, Shawn text to make sure we had gotten home. I was so mad, I made my husband respond. Shawn: Hey there, just following up to make sure you guys got home OK. Larry (us): So we are curious on when the last time Rhino went out to potty? We came home to him laying on a urine soaked bed and kennel. And noticed that you had plugged in an air freshener. His entire belly is broken out in a rash and blisters. Shawn: Oh no! I took him outside at 5:30 right before I left and he peed outside. Larry: We got home at 6:45, there was an air freshener plugged in next to his kennel, which was not there before we left, so obviously it smelled to you, which seems like he peed in it before you left. He has never peed in his kennel before. Shawn: “Oh no! It just smelled like stinky dog. He peed for me every single time I took him outside.” The next morning I went out on to the deck, and found some of Rhino’s excrement next to the grill. Then I looked closer and saw more about 10 inches behind that, I also saw some stuck the the side of the house 3’ up, and yet another piece on the railing just behind the grill. It looks as if Rhino pooped in the house because he wasn’t walked, and due to the rain that Denver had all of the time we were gone, Shawn opened the sliding glass door and tossed the excrement out to the left, to try to hit the grass, and none of it made it that far. I walked out into the yard, and found where Rhino had puked up toilet paper, which means that the door to the powder bath had been left open, and we specifically told him that could not happen, as the meds make him so hungry and thirsty, he will try to eat the toilet paper. Our dogs were never walked, confirmed by a neighbor that asked us who had been watching the kids. He said Shawn was never at the house more than an hour, and definitely never spent the night, and he never once saw Shawn walk the dogs. All dogs need to be walked daily, and we told him in person that we walk them in the afternoon when the temperature is cooler as well as including it in the typed notes. Needless to say, we will never use Shawn again, and not feeling great about Rover.com at this point.

Shawn did a wonderful job watching our 11 year old black lab. He was great handling her idiosyncrasies, and she was happy and relaxed when we got home. We loved getting the photos and updates about Mandy. And it was awesome that he came to meet us and our dog before we left and supplied us with references. We plan to use Shawn again and strongly recommend him.

Information Shawn C. would like to know about your pet

I am open to any dog breed. I love learning new things about breeds I don't see as often. Before I sit for your dog, I'd like to know any previous medical history and any current medications. Having a fully vaccinated dog is always prefered. Puppies 6 months and younger should not be exposed to other animals just quite yet.

A typical day

I spend a great deal of time at the Cherry Creek Dog Park in Aurora, but I also know of many trails in the area to get fresh air and let the dogs sniff around.
