I want to be your Dog's Best Friend

Pet care experience

I have been taking care of dogs for over 30 years. My home is in Plum Borough and it is set back about 2 acres off the main road. I have a small in home grooming salon and I take care of some of my customer's doggie friends while they are away. I can accommodate dogs that are friendly with other dogs. I have taken care of many older dogs, puppies, and dogs with special needs. I have a large fenced yard for group playtime or individual playtime. I also enjoy sending pictures and videos of your pet's vacation during their stay. Come visit my home/shop to see if Dog's Best Friend is the right fit for you and your special doggie friend!

Thank you for taking care of our 6 year old Kelpie. It was her first time being without her family but she seemed to adjust well due to Shannon and her staff. They sent videos that showed our dog was OK.

Great care with our pups. We also received videos of them playing with other dogs. This was also reassuring. Thanks Shannon!

Shannon was so pleasant and kind. Our Eddie was afraid to go into her home and she was extremely patient and she made him feel secure. She sent frequent videos of Eddie having a great time during the weekend. She was extremely accommodating and we will definitely use her services in the future when we are in the Pittsburgh area.

POLICIES AND PROCEDURES: Reservations can now be made for stays during 2023. GROOMING UPON ARRIVAL: We require that all guests are groomed here at Dog's Best Friend Grooming Salon at the owner's expense upon their arrival for their stay. This will help ensure that all guests are clean, pest free, and healthy for their stay. It will also reduce shedding throughout our home where the guests will be staying. This new policy will help keep our home and all pets cleaner and healthier. DROP OFF AND PICK UP: Drop off times are between 9:00 am-2:00 pm. Pick up times are between 9:00 am and 6:00 pm. Only members that live in the same household as the dog can drop off the dog and pick up the dog. There is too much confusion when friends and family outside of the household bring the dog or pick them up. We want your dog's stay to be the best possible stay and this new procedure will help achieve that goal. VACCINATION REQUIREMENTS: ALL DOGS MUST BE PROTECTED FROM FLEAS AND TICKS WITH AN EFFECTIVE FLEA/TICK PREVENTATIVE. ALL DOGS MUST BE UP TO DATE ON VACCINATIONS-DAP/DHPP and rabies. Bordatella is optional and at the owner's discretion.

Information Shannon P. would like to know about your pet

It is very important that all of my doggie friends that stay with me are up to date on vaccinations and that they are all using an effective flea and tick prevention during their stay with me. All vacationing guests will be around other friendly dogs and they will come to work with me in my grooming shop. I don't want any guests to take home any unwanted "friends". My primary profession is dog grooming. My grooming shop is located in my home where I take care of doggie friends. Please ask about including grooming services during your pet's stay.

A typical day

YOUR DOG'S STAY AT THE DOGGY GUEST ROOM We will take care of one or two families' dogs during each vacation time period. All of the guests will stay in our home with me and my adult family and our two dogs, Gus and Pickles. We have a guest room set up for the dogs that consists of a toddler bed, a futon, a dresser for their belongings, and two extra large crates if needed or wanted. The guests will use this room various times throughout the day and night, however they will have free roam of the rest of the house as well. I will be happy to text you videos and pictures of your dog during their stay so that you can see how well they are doing and how much fun they are having on their doggy vacation. IS THE DOGGY GUEST ROOM AT DBF A GOOD FIT FOR MY DOG? The home environment at The Doggy Guest Room is a good fit for a dog that is people friendly and dog friendly. We do not have any children in the home, so that is not a requirement. We do have one adult female and two adult males. We also have two dogs that live here. Gus is an 11 year old chinese crested. He prefers dogs in his size range and enjoys their company and will even play sometimes. He will accept larger dogs, but he will have to let them know that he is the boss around here. He is very nervous around extra large dogs which means that we will not be able to take care of our sweet XL friends at this time. Pickles is about 7 years old. She is a boxer/basset hound mix. Pickles is friendly with all size dogs and would like to play with any dog that would like to play with her! In addition to being dog friendly and people friendly our guests need to be fully housebroken. This is of course to keep our home as clean as possible for our family and our guests. WHAT WILL MY DOG BE DOING DURING THEIR STAY? Here is a glimpse of a stay at the doggy guest room: ARRIVAL DAY: When your dog arrives for their stay we will check them in through the grooming shop entrance. Every guest will have a grooming spa day upon arrival. After their grooming the guests will enjoy the large fenced yard and meet the other guests and their doggy hosts, Gus and Pickles. When they have become acquainted with the yard and all of the smells that it provides, we will show them to their room. We will put all of the belongings in the room so that they know that this is their space with their stuff. Then they will have the opportunity to explore the rest of the house and meet any people that they have not met yet. The rest of the day consists of puppy dinner, an evening walk around the yard, bedtime treats, and bedtime. Your dog will have several options of where they can sleep. Some dogs may sleep in my bed with me, my husband, and Gus (lol). Some dogs might sleep in a dog bed near my bed. Some dogs might sleep in Nathan's room either in his bed or on a dog bed. Some dogs will sleep in the doggy guest room where they will have the option of sleeping on the toddler bed, on the futon, on a bed that they have brought from home, or in one of the spacious dog crates. DAY 2 AND ON: The first thing that we do each morning is that we all go outside for morning potty break. We will spend 15-30 minutes outside depending on the weather. Next we will come in and have puppy breakfast. After breakfast we will have another potty break/playtime outside for 30 minutes or more depending on the weather. The rest of the day will consist of various playtimes inside and outside and possibly meeting other doggy friends throughout the day. Guests can accompany me to the grooming shop on grooming days (Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday) or they can stay upstairs and relax while I am at work. Either way there will be several potty breaks/playtimes outside and also a couple treat times. On days that the grooming shop is not open we will spend the day upstairs and in addition to outside play times we might enjoy other activities such as doggy puzzles and snuffle mat, cuddle times and petting, and nap times. The rest of our day is dinner, evening walk, treats, and bedtime. By this time your dog is getting used to the routine and feeling quite at home. DEPARTURE DAY: We have either set up a pick up day and time or you will be keeping in touch to let me know when you will be picking up your family member. I will collect all of their items from wherever they are around the house or in the yard at this point (lol). I will take their items down to the grooming shop where you will pick up your pet at the agreed upon time. I will try to have your dog in the grooming shop and all packed and ready to go about 10 minutes before you arrive. We do not want to get down there too early or have to wait too long because the dogs will get too excited and then bored to have to wait once they know that they are going home. Some of the activities that I have done with my doggie guests include the following: Group and individual yard playtime Evening walks around the yard Pool and Hose play on hot days Doggie Activity Puzzles and Snuffle Blanket Couch Cuddling Lot and Lots of Petting

WHAT SHOULD I PACK FOR MY DOG'S STAY? Here is a list of items that you can bring to make your dog feel more at home during their vacation: 1. PLEASE MAKE A LIST OF ALL ITEMS THAT YOU BRING FOR YOUR PET SO THAT WHEN THEY GO HOME I CAN USE THE LIST TO MAKE SURE THAT THEY TAKE HOME EVERYTHING THAT THEY BROUGHT. PLEASE LABEL ALL OF YOUR DOG'S ITEMS. 2. ***YOUR DOG'S FOOD- PLEASE LET ME KNOW AND WRITE DOWN ANY FOOD RESTRICTIONS THAT YOUR DOG HAS. This is the only item that is required for you to bring for your pet's stay. All other items are optional. Please bring your dog's normal food. You can also bring "special" food to add to your dog's meals if you think that they might not want to eat while they are away from you. Some suggestions are wet dog food, refrigerated dog food, or people food that your dog might like. Here at The Doggy Guest Room we have been called an inclusive resort by some of our guests' people. That is because sometimes I will add something special to the doggy breakfast or the doggy dinner. The guests have enjoyed special meals that have included wet or refrigerated dog foods, as well as people foods like chicken, salmon, sweet potatoes, eggs, rice, yogurt, and other healthy delicious foods. 3. ***YOUR DOG'S MEDICATION- If your dog is taking any type of medications during the time that they will be on vacation please be sure to bring them. Please write down detailed instructions for days, times, dosages, and any other necessary details for properly administering your pet's medications. Please make sure that the tablets are already cut into the correct sizes if needed. 4. TREATS- All of the guests enjoy having a variety of treats. We do encourage you to bring a nice variety of treats for your dog and the other dogs to share. We also share our treats with all of the guests. Some of the treats that we have shared include carrots, green beans, small pieces of meat, cheese, or other people foods, pupperonis, meaty dog treats, various dog biscuits, and sometimes even a dental chew or other bone type treat. NO RAWHIDE TREATS PLEASE. 5. BLANKETS AND BEDS- We have plenty of blankets and dog beds available for the guests in The Doggy Guest Room and throughout our home. However, you are welcome to bring your dog's own bedding if you would like. Please make sure that it is easily washable in the washing machine in case it gets dirty and I need to wash it. Also, be aware that other dogs may also enjoy using your dog's bed. We do share everything here. 6. BOWLS- We do have plenty of bowls for food and water. You are welcome to bring your own bowls if you would like. Please no glass or ceramic bowls. And please label all of your items. 7. TOYS AND BONES- We have plenty of toys and bones for guests to enjoy. You are welcome to bring some from home if you would like. My dogs and the other guests do enjoy some new toys and chew bones. Just keep in mind that all of the dogs share everything here so there is always the possibility that a dog may enjoy a toy a little too much, so please do not bring anything that you will be upset if it gets lost or destroyed. 8. ANYTHING ELSE THAT YOU THINK WILL MAKE YOUR DOG FEEL COMFORTABLE- We want all of the guests to be as comfortable as possible during their stay. Please bring any items on the list or not on the list that you think will help your dog have the best possible vacation.
