Experienced pet parent & volunteer

Pet care experience

I've had animals since I was about 4 years old. My parents started my sister and I with rabbits, but our home quickly grew to include hamsters, gerbils, and my first dog at 10. I haven't been without a pet in over 25 years. I am currently Mom to 2 cats, 1 dog, and a 20 gallon fish tank. Neighbors, friends, and family have asked me to watch their animals over the years - dogs, cats, fish, hermit crabs, even a bearded dragon. I volunteered with a cat rescue for 5 years. I acted as adoption counselor, foster, and cage cleaner. I attended multiple spay and neuter clinics where I helped cats in recovery. I also volunteered as a dog walker for over 2 years at a kennel. (An out of state move meant I had to give up both rescues I grew so fond of.) I have taken a pet first aid and cpr class. We learned how to treat dogs and cats in an emergency situation, should the need arise. I thought this was particularly helpful for the dog shelter. I was also trained in proper prong-collar technique (though I do not believe in them for my own dog, nor would I ever use one without explicit instruction from a pet parent). I follow instruction well. I brake for squirrels. I rehabilitate birds who fly into the windows at work (very unfortunate). I make friends with any dog, cat, fish, fur, feather, or scaly friend I can. I'd love to meet your babies!

Sara was so kind and loving to our cat while we were out of town. We got a full report and even pictures every day! I know he was in good hands and well cared for. I would definitely work with her again!

Sarah took the time to get to know my dog and made sure she felt safe and comfortable on their walk. It was so nice to have a reliable person to care for my pup while I was out of town!

I ran a 2-hr dog-walking shift for a local no-kill shelter for about 5 years. During that time I had the privilege of working closely with Sarah where, over the 2+ years we worked together, she grew to be far and away my most valuable volunteer team member. Scrupulously reliable, I could always count on her presence on the shift as well as her deep concern for the dogs in our charge. In every situation, be it working with new dogs who were frightened and in need of reassurance or working to win the trust of one of our "problem children", or handling the less enjoyable, quotidian chores of clean up and maintenance, Sarah takes the initiative to get the job not just done but done well, always with an eye to making the situation better not just for the dogs but for all of us on the team. I could not recommend her more highly!

I'm very good with instruction! Whatever care your babies may need, I'm willing and able to help. I have medicated dogs and cats, both willing and unwilling. I can use whatever commands you do for dog training/obedience. I would never feed or give your pets anything other than what you tell me is OK. (I.e. I won't introduce new toys or treats, or share human food) I'm mobile, with my own car. I know my babies are always happiest at home. I'd love to visit your babies and feed them and give them some loving when you can't be there.

Information Sarah B. would like to know about your pet

From my experience as a volunteer dog walker, I know it's important to know ahead of time if dogs are allergic to anything, if they are leash reactive to other animals or humans, and what their "No, thank you" signs are. From there, I'm happy to pay attention to your dog and their behavior and body language. I can't wait to learn all about their personality! Every dog is so different. I also want to know about any special needs - medications, limited walks, fears, etc.

A typical day

I'm all about loving your dog in your dog's love language! Do they love pets? I give excellent pets! Do they want to walk? I can walk. Do they love tug of war or fetch? Me too!

I frequently work from home. I'm lucky to have a flexible schedule. I have no problem taking breaks to check in on some four legged friends, or take a dog for a walk. I'm also free most week nights. I've always appreciated help from friends, family, and neighbors when I needed to be away from home, and would love to pay it forward in my new neighborhood!
