Experienced, level, and loving

Pet care experience

Hello! My name is Ruby, and I am an animal lover, homeowner, and gardener. I was lucky enough to grow up in a vet hospital, where my mom was a groomer and trainer. Because of this background, safety comes first, and a calm, kind, consistent environment is priority for me. My mom would bring home different animals over the years, sometimes for a week, sometimes for years, and the remainder of their lives. Ducks, chickens, rabbits, bearded dragons, rats, snakes, beta fish, cockatiels, an African Grey, and endless dogs and cats. As a result, I have experience with administering medications, basic grooming, basic house manners, basic training, and seniors and youngsters. I will meet your animal where they are, and will provide the type of care best suited for them. Whether soothing anxious pets, providing companionship, or providing plentiful exercise and mental stimulation, the animals come first. Most of my early life was spent caring for and learning about animals. I communicate well with them, and care for them deeply. While I helped out in the grooming shop starting at age 7, my official training began when I was 12, when I apprenticed with professional dog handlers. After training in obedience, agility, hunting, and herding trials, I became a professional handler at 19. Though rewarding, after 3 years, I chose to shift focus to travel and pursue a degree in the Sciences. I have worked with Trusted Housesitters to trade my attentive nature for lodging in Portland, Or. You would be hard-pressed to find someone more hard-wired to pay attention to, and be responsible for your animal's well-being and safety. I am open, honest, friendly, and communicate well. And mostly? I simply love animals. 😊

Ruby walks my dog Onyx 4x a week every week. She is always very prompt and thorough in her communication. Mom and I feel very safe with her and Onyx and can tell he’s getting such a good amount of love and attention. She goes above and beyond in working with Onyx and she very picked up on the nuances of Onyx and how to best work with him!

I just wanted to express my gratitude to Ruby for doing such a fantastic job looking after my baby. We were away for three nights, and Ruby stayed in constant communication throughout. As someone who travels frequently, I am relieved to have found someone trustworthy to take care of my dog while I'm away. I highly recommend Ruby's services and will definitely be using them again in the future.

Ruby is wonderful with my pup Onyx and a pleasure to work with. Her communication is clear, frequent and in a timely manner. She is also very on time and sends very cute photos of my pup! Onyx is a little on the sensitive side and I can tell by his demeanor when I come home that he feels secure and happy. She also has done a great job of reading Onyx and giving him what he wants, rather than forcing him to walk (I.e sit and watch the ducks). I also appreciate all the work Ruby has done to uphold my training with Onyx with his reactivity on leash!!

Ruby was an excellent house and pet sitter!! She tended to everything with such loving care and attention to detail, bonded with our kitties, left our home very clean, was responsive with communication, and was completely trust-worthy, self-sufficient and responsible. We would have her housesit again in a heartbeat and happily recommend her to anyone!

Safety, trust & environment

I have a large fenced yard that is safe and dog-proofed. There are no toxic plants, no small toys, no toxic chemicals sprayed. All entry points are securely gated and locked. There is no fence shorter than 6 feet, and the majority are 8 feet. As I am always in the yard with the animals, I correct any digging as it arises. I will not walk your dog off leash. If you have a jumper, or an escape artist, let's communicate and see if this is a good fit. Safety first. I live with my partner, a tall, gentle male. He works closer to 50 hours a week, and is not home nearly as much as I am. Though animals love him, I am responsible for caring for the animals as it is in my DNA. He is calm, kind, and consistent with door and gate closures, and loves to play with the animals. The animals get double love :) I have two dogs, both Cardigan Welsh Corgis, both females, one 11 years old, one 16 months old. I have one cat, a male Bengal, 11 years old. Both Corgis are very friendly, the older sleeps most of the day, the younger loves to play and run. They have been excellent companions to dogs staying over. If the younger dog is too energetic for a senior dog, I will consider boarding her at my mom's house for a maximum of three days. The cat is aloof, indoor only, and has run of the house. He enjoys other cats immensely, and has a lovely outdoor catio where he gets to watch the birds. One client was unaware that her dog was cat aggressive, so I now require a doggy day care day to assess compatibility and safety. I prefer to crate dogs at night, as I find they relax and rest much better. I put a lot of time and energy into the animals I am entrusted to care for. I take it seriously. For this reason, I only accept two dogs at a time. I will accept one cat, but only if I have no dog clients, as I cannot be sure of their habits. I only accept a client if I am sure it will be beneficial for all. I am always available for questions and communication. If this is a good fit, you can rest assured that your pet will be safe, exercised, and well-loved.

A typical day

I enjoy engaging with the animals I spend time with. If they enjoy games, I will play with them. If they enjoy cuddling, I would love to read a book with them. If they just need a bit of exercise, my backyard and neighborhood are safe, and full of fun smells. If they need more exercise, I would be thrilled to go hiking with them, or take them on a walk around the Sparks Marina or Virginia Lake.

I will approach boarding on a case-by-case basis. If I do not think I can provide the level of time with your pet that is appropriate, I will tell you immediately. I currently work approximately 20 hours a week, out of the home. My schedule is consistent, and I work Thursday through Sunday evening, 4 or 5 hours a day. Monday through Wednesday, I am either at home, or hiking with my two dogs. I am hands-on, attentive, and active with the animals in my care. If there is an emergency, such as a power outage, my mother (the ultimate animal expert) lives right next door, and is retired and able to tend to the animals. I keep my two dogs crated while at work and overnight while sleeping. They love their crates, and this guarantees their safety and relaxation. During the day, and on my off days, they roam free in the house and in my large backyard. I actively play with and walk them. There are ample toys and balls.
