I have a disabled rescue Cocker Spaniel!

Pet care experience

My experience with dogs is certainly not limited! I’ve been around them my whole life and now my partner and I have our disabled Cocker Spaniel whom we rescued when he was 2, almost 5 years ago now! I have also worked as a pet sitter, dog walker and dog behaviourist/trainer so I am experienced in the industry. I’ve cared for puppies/dogs from a few days old, all the way until their last few months as a golden oldie. I have also cared for/rescued almost every type of common pet animal from birds, reptiles, inverts, amphibians, rodents, small mammals, fish and of course dogs and cats. I do also have a lot of experience with horses and farm animals, including basic riding skills.

Brilliant with my two dogs and very flexible with timings she will always go out of her way to help where she can. Would highly recommend to anyone.

Rachel looked after our cat and two rabbits while we were on holiday, coming round twice a day to check on them and feed and water them. She was polite, responsible and clearly loves all animals and has a lot of experience and qualification in this area. I have great confidence in her and will gladly leave my pets in her care again when needed. Thank you Rachel!

Rach has been amazing looking after my family’s two crazy Springer Spaniels! They can certainly be a handful but she is very confident with handling them both and it’s obvious how much she cares about them, it shows as they absolutely love her. Never had any issues with their care and she often does little things like pick up the post or bring the bins to help us out which we appreciate. She usually sends us pictures on their walks and always tries her best to make sure they’re clean when returned, although with two spaniels that’s not easy!

I have my own disabled dog so I’m comfortable with caring for pets with all kinds of needs. My boy is allowed on our beds, settees etc but if I’m looking after a pet, I stick to their rules at home so if they’re allowed up at home, they are with me but if they’re not, rules are the same here. I have experience with dogs of all ages and sizes and I’m comfortable with anything from tiny puppies up to big Great Danes, German Shepherds and any types of Bully breeds! I can’t have many dogs stay with me as my boy is scared of other dogs so it wouldn’t be fair on him and I’m not going to disrupt his routine. I am Canine First Aid qualified as well as Canine Behaviour and Training, Canine Nutrition and have basic experience with grooming so always happy to offer advice. I am happy to board smaller caged pets but can’t have cats at my house as my partner is allergic and dogs are difficult with my disabled dog.

Information Rachel H. would like to know about your pet

I try to keep pets in their usual routine that they’d have with their owners, so please let me know what that is and I’ll do my best to keep things the same for them. I’m happy to feed any type of food (raw included!) and administer medication where needed, any specific requirements then just make me aware and I am happy to accommodate them. Happy to deal with any allergies, supplements etc as well.

A typical day

I believe that not only physical exercise, but mental enrichment is key to a dog’s happiness! I love to mix up the walks so that some days we will practice training, other days will be a ‘sniffari’ walk as I like to call them, where the dog can focus on sniffing different scents rather than covering distance as that’s great mental stimulation for them. I also love to play games and bring toys on walks for them to play with. Treats are always given as rewards for recall etc (as long as approved by owner - I will always ask first!). If they’re friendly with other dogs, I love to let them meet and play in a controlled way, but I have a reactive dog myself so I’m also experienced with making walks fun for dogs that don’t have play friends.

At the moment I have just had a baby, so I am not working which means that my schedule is very flexible and I can usually take bookings with very short notice, sometimes same day. I do tend to bring my baby with me but can sometimes get childcare for a little while although I try to avoid relying on family like this. My baby goes in a carrier on my chest whilst I’m walking dogs, or for pet visits he can stay in his car seat beside me. However, visits that are later on in the evening and most weekends, my partner is home so I won’t have our baby with me. It just depends on timings so please let me know if you’re happy with this.
