Dog-loving cat person at the ready!

Pet care experience

PET CARE HISTORY: I grew up with Labradors and was responsible for feeding, walking and poop-scooping from a young age. When I was 15 my family got a Lab puppy and I trained her basic commands, and I'm proud to say that she was the BEST girl for her very long life. My family adopted our first cat at age 16, and then I promptly became a hybrid dog/cat person. Over my adolescence I routinely dog walked and did cat check-ins for my neighbors. Now that I'm in Burlington, I routinely dog sit and dog walk for family and friends, and have taken in dogs for several days at a time. I recently began running with a friend's dog and loved it, so that's a fun enrichment activity I can offer :) MY PETS: Upon moving to Burlington my husband and I adopted our first pet, a beautiful black American shorthair named Frankie. We didn't know it at the time, but she had cerebellar hypoplasoa, hydrocephalus, and a progressive neurodegenerative disorder. We became experts on managing a chronically ill cat, including administering oral medication, giving her a bath (a true art form), helping her go to the bathroom, and making our home accessible since she could not jump. We had to say goodbye to her after just two years, but she taught us so much and cemented our undying love for cats, especially those that need a little TLC. We now have an American shorthair, Aldo, with whom I am utterly besotted.

Phoebe has taken exceptional care of our elderly husky Lu! She is patient, attentive, kind and a clear animal lover. We would paw-sitively recommend her!!

Safety, trust & environment

Cats and dogs are so different so my approach necessarily varies! And, as pet-owners know, every animal has their own personality, likes, and dislikes. If I'm picking up a dog for a walk / run, I will want to meet with you first to get a sense of your security systems (i.e. dog fence; the security of your backyard, etc). I'll also want to know if your dog is a bolter, sniffer, squirrel chaser, etc - this helps me be prepared to ensure their safety and fun! If your dog wants to run with me, we should chat about how far / fast, if they have good enough recall to be off leash, and other important details. With cats, I'll want to understand their quirks. If they don't want to see me, fine; I just want to know they're safe and happy.

Information Phoebe K. would like to know about your pet

My preference is for dogs that are not reactive or overly aggressive. I am fit and active but I'm also only 5'2 so there's a limit to my strength if a dog is really pulling for something!

A typical day

I like to walk and run by the waterfront and know many of the great wooded trails around Burlington and especially near the ONE. I routinely run 3-6 miles a day so would love to bring your dog along for a romp!

Availability

I am a graduate student with a variable schedule. Depending on the day, I may have anywhere from an hour to 3 hours free at a time, but I do have breaks intermittently throughout the day. I am working nearby as part of my graduate training, so I can be flexible if needed, especially when it comes to house visits for cats. I enjoy running in the evening so if your dog could use some exercise, that's generally my time!
