Dedicated Humane Society Volunteer
Pet care experience
I've been volunteering at the Humane Society of Boulder Valley (HSBV) since 2015 and have logged close to 85 hrs in 2017 and 2018. At the HSBV, I've helped to care for dogs in the shelter as they await adoption through feeding, walking, and cleaning up any messes in the kennels. As a volunteer, I've also worked in the Give a Dog a Bone (GADAB) program which provides volunteers with extra training to deal with dogs at the shelter that haven't been deemed adoptable candidates yet. These dogs may be strays, recent intakes, sick, or extremely fearful and require extra care and consideration when they are brought out for daily exercise. Unfortunately, my current residence does not allow dogs, but my significant other and I currently take care of two kittens, Moshi and Hammer, who were both adopted from local shelters. I even take Hammer out on leash walks! I'm a young professional who works at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory developing marine renewable energy technologies. Since I work at a research laboratory my schedule is flexible and can work to find the right time to visit your dog or cats.

Nathan was great! Got pics and my pup was happy, or so it seemed, ha. Thanks Nathan!
Nathan is an awesome sitter! My puppy, Tikka, loves him and I'm so grateful that he is able to take her out, go on a walk, and feed her dinner while I am taking night classes. He is great with animals and sent me updates about Tikka, which gave me piece of mind. I highly recommend Nathan!
Nathan is a truly caring, reliable, and trustworthy person who is fantastic with animals. I'm not exaggerating when I say that he is like a Cesar Millan with dogs and a Jackson Galaxy with cats in Boulder! He has gotten tons of training on how to handle animals from the Humane Society, he grew up with a dog, and now has two adorable kittens that he has trained to do tricks. I highly recommend him!
Nathan has volunteered with dogs at the Humane Society of Boulder Valley for over 4 years now. He is incredibly caring and skilled with dog handling, and has had experience handling dogs with all sorts of different behaviors (fearful, energetic, you name it!). Nathan is very intuitive to dogs' needs, and would be a patient, reliable, and wonderful dog caregiver for anyone in need!

A typical day
It would depend on what activities my clients' dog is used to during a normal week at home. I'd focus on playing fetch or letting the dog off leash in a large back yard or enclosed space as this allows the dog to have the most freedom and choice in how'd they like to spend their time outside. If the dog enjoys the outdoors I can easily walk or jog to the local trailhead Sanitas and take them up one of the side trails.
