Come Vacation @ Canine Camp Woody!

Pet care experience

PLEASE READ MY ENTIRE PROFILE before requesting a stay with us!!! First things first-I’m an expert when it comes to caring for multiple dogs. I essentially “train” dogs how to live their best lives, in large part, by showing and teaching them how to properly and safely socialize with other dogs, alternating with how to chill out and relax. Our space is well suited to encourage/support both lazing & socializing. The reality is that the majority of training is done by the dogs who have been coming here long enough to become completely comfortable in our super social setting. On average there are 5-8 dogs here per day. There’s a hierarchy of sorts which changes constantly depending on which dogs are here. I simply hold a safe space for all. I find I can usually fully incorporate an unsocialized pup into the mix within 48 hours. All pups I take in are initially vetted by my 4-legged companion RinPoche. He doesn’t reject many, instead he lets them know who the Top Dog is!!! That said, relative comfort around multiple other dogs of all sizes and breed is paramount for a comfortable stay. DISCLAIMER!!! I ONLY work with discerning dog owners who are FULLY invested in the treatment their animal companion(s) will get while they're away. For those of you out there price shopping or looking last minute to dump your dog off to the first available sitter that responds while you jet away on some "busy" life mission we're most definitely not for you!

Woody was great! He had our dogs come over before confirming their stay to make sure they got along with the others, was very attentive to our younger dog, and sent frequent thorough updates and photos. He definitely knows what he’s talking about when it comes to dog behavior. We were worried about going out of town and leaving our new dog for the the first time, but Woody couldn’t have been a better dog sitter. Our dogs got tons of exercise on outings to the levee and the younger one learned how to behave in a pack. Our dogs will definitely be staying with Willie again!

Woody took great care of Sonny! His place is definitely more suitable for adult dogs but he paid extra attention to my puppy and smoothly accommodated him!

Safety, trust & environment

I have a spacious, fenced-in space and DogHouse with an “open door” policy when I’m home which is about 90% of the time. Open door just means all dogs have access to inside or out unless there’s a need to separate a particular dog(s) for any reason which is easily done by partitioning off various sections of the house or yard. READ THIS! VERY IMPORTANT!! *If your dog has the desire or tendency to “escape” secure spaces we’re not a good fit for you!!! I WILL NOT ACCEPT A BOOKING UNTIL THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS RELATED TO YOUR DOGS TENDENCY TO “WALKABOUT” ARE ACKNOWLEDGED AND ANSWERED: 1) If the front gate to my yard is inadvertently left open what will your dog most likely do? a) stay in the yard b) go exploring the neighborhood then come back on their own c) run for the hills 2) If someone is coming into my yard, with or without a dog, when opening the gate what will your dog likely do? a) greet appropriately and move away on command b) excitedly jump up on the visitor and/or their dog c) try to sneak out of the gate as soon as it opens and make a break for it 3a) Has your dog ever escaped your yard? If yes how did he/she find their way back? **If your dog doesn’t come when called, or at least stop and acknowledge their name has been called, we’re not a good fit for you!!! *** If you’re unsure about either of these requirements either err on the side of safety or arrange to bring and leave your dog for a 1/2 day to give them a test “run.” As I’ve mentioned our yard is fenced and secure but any dog that really wants to get out will get out (or over or thru or under, etc). The dogs we regularly care for enjoy it here enough that they don’t have a desire to go roaming as they have all they need here. There are plenty of sitters out there who’ll keep your dog crated or inside all day. That’s not how we roll here nor do we intend to!!!

Information Woody P. would like to know about your pet

I’d like to know the following on a 1-10 scale (1 being completely submissive 10 being highly dominant): 1) What is your dog’s off-leash temperament in a social play-type environment? 2) Food aggression level, if any? 3) Dog’s recall ability to their voiced name, particularly “come” command from a distance? 4) Any separation anxiety issues? 5) Escape from enclosed area tendencies? Related to #5 above and just to make sure we’re on the same page I am including this here again as it’s included in the safety, trust, environment section of my profile: *If your dog has the desire or tendency to “escape” secure spaces (and not return back after being called) we’re not a good fit for you!!!

A typical day

A typical day at Camp Woody is morning drop off for day-care dogs. M/W/F there are 3 regular dogs that come between 7-9am. First dog dropped off has their person unlock and open the front door. I’m usually up with the first dog and always there to meet any new additions to the pack. Random dogs, both clients and friends, are in and out during the course of the week. The majority of the day is spent with the pack following me around as I go thru my daily routine. A lot of lounging and backyard play when I’m working out there. Most of the dogs like to hang out on the front porch and watch the world (and neighbor dogs) pass by, usually with a greeting bark. Each day there’s a trip to the dog levee at the end of Broadway. Times for this daily trip vary based on season, weather, and dogs coming and going. Occasionally I’ll host one that prefers to stay at the house which is fine. The rest load into my van and we drive out to the MS river dog-levee in between the Army Corp of Engineer bldg and the Fly for some off leash frolicking and a swim for those who enjoy the water. If need be I’ll keep certain dogs on-leash for various reasons including lack of recall training, keeping out of the mud or water, keeping up with the pack, when horses are present, etc… I work with each client individually on this to make sure their pup stays safe.

I also currently have three here with me full time (the aforementioned Rin, foster dog Miss T, long-term boarder Molly). On any given day I host on average 5-8 dogs which is a very comfortable and manageable number for me. The max I’ve had here is 15, all regulars, during Christmas!!!
