Originating from Scandinavia, we have a law there saying that dogs can not stay home alone more than 6 hours a day. I love that and I also apply this here in the States for my dog. Our four legged family members need the socializing part both from us humans and also from other dogs. I believe exercise is key to their well being! I have had different kinds of animals through my life but for the past 10 years I have spent most time with dogs. I have a Jack Russell terrier now whom I take care of fully. I walk my dog at least twice a day and at least 20min a day which makes her calmer and happier. I do work occasionally providing other house services in clients homes and most of them have dogs, I get along with all of them, big and small and always make sure the dogs get their potty breaks and some playtime while I am there, especially if I know the owners work full time.
