The Englishman and his Dogs

Pet care experience

I have always had a love for animals. Growing up with cats and dogs, I knew I would one day work with dogs, in particular. It all started when I rescued my first Greyhound, Molly. Before we knew it, we’d adopted 4 rescues and we’re loving it. Paying particular attention to the needs of this breed, I grew to learn how to cater to their diet, their exercise needs, their quirks, their variance in prey drive, and even their kennel requirements when staying away. We treat our dogs like our children, and of course, you only want the best, particularly when they are in the care of someone else. We searched far and wide for the right vets, the right doggy hotels (we even drove 4 hours away from home and found the perfect greyhound kennel!) until we thought ‘Wait a minute, we could probably do this ourselves!’. So my wife and I decided to start our own business – The Greyhound Luxury Retreat. As of June 2016, we opened our home and hearts to sighthounds. We offered pick-up and drop-off services, daycare, overnight, walks, food (provided should the owners choose), weekend-walks, enclosed field for off-lead play and walks around our property to the Greyhound community. From the day we opened our business to the day (literally, the day before we came to the US) we were booked with dogs staying with us. Our clients were very upset about our departure and kindly said they’d struggle finding a place that felt like a home away from home for their furbabies. Every dog is different in their own beautiful way. I thoroughly enjoyed meeting and boarding all the characters we had the pleasure of meeting. I dealt with younger dogs, older dogs, dogs with high prey drive and dogs that couldn’t be bothered if a squirrel was by their side. We had the couch-hoggers, the floor-sprawlers, the leaners, the followers, the ‘I”ll eat in my own time’ers, the slow walkers, the fast walkers, the non-walkers that I managed to get to walk, and everything in between. And again, loved every minute of it. Our clients knew we understood their dogs, and kept coming back and we loved having them back, it was so lovely to see how excited the dogs were when they would come back and know their way around.
