Your pup and I will talk life :)
Pet care experience
I was a prospective grad student before I had kids. Then, I realized academic life will just need to take a pause while I rear my kids into the world. In the meantime, my military experience gave me a nicely-sized pension, so then I found myself looking for a vocation that paid in positive experiences. So I dabbled in art, made a documentary for UCLA, worked for non-profits, and became a contributing journalist to the radio station KPFK 90.7fm. They were all great, interesting experiences, but they all missed one thing: FUN! I want to play, walk and get to know your pup (or big dog!). I communicate using ONLY positive reinforcement to make sure your pup feels loved every time she/he sees me, and that they learn the world is a fun, interesting place. I currently volunteer with the Pasadena Humane Society & SPCA, where I work with shy dogs to become more social. I'm also training my own pup to be a service dog. So, I'm acquainted with what's necessary to encourage positive behavior and realize that dogs, when faced with strangers and new situations, need a lot of time and positive reinforcement. (I have two little girls, ages 2 and 4, so I'm a big practioner of of positive reinforcement) I let your pet set the tempo for walks, whether brisk or casual. I let pets explore with their noses, and may kindly suggest to move on with a gentle tug and kissy noises. I will talk to your dog, about what we're seeing, what we're doing, and perhaps I'll think aloud about my day! :) It's important for dogs to get as much stimulation as possible during their outings. Accordingly, my personal rule is NOT to pull harshly or jerk your pet. My goal is calm, reassuring handling and voices. In my experience, most dogs will sniff and explore for the first half of their walk, and when that's satisfied, we pick up the speed for a brisk walk. I've been around dogs my whole life. I just figured, if I can provide a positive experience for a dog, charge a very reasonable rate, the owners can feel satisfied their dog is getting attention, and I can have some fun... well, it's a win-win for everyone. Admittedly, I'm new to Rover.com, but with my experience and outlook, I can provide a positive experience.
