I grew up in a big family on the East Coast near a farm where we had all kinds of animals & pets. After completing graduate school, I worked in law enforcement for over 15 years, which required me to assist animal control and local animal shelters with rescue, care, and transportation for various animals. Growing up near a farm, we had pets of all kinds, including cats, dogs, fish, chickens, turkeys, pigs, geese, and a lamb. As the oldest sibling, I was tasked with feeding our animals, maintaining their pens and bedding, and helping with routine care (i.e., brushing, bathing, and applying their medicine). I learned the importance of routine, following instructions, and practicing compassion early. Over time, I realized that each animal required extra care and had a different temperament. My love and compassion for animals and the outdoors continued throughout my life. I would have a large aquarium of fish, one for reptiles, two more fluffy cats, and three more energetic dogs. When I was available, I would revel in watching and taking care of my family and friends' pets, including taking them on long walks, playtime at the park, snuggle time on the couch, and sometimes transportation to their scheduled check-ups. During my tenure in law enforcement, I witnessed various kinds of excellent care and sometimes unfortunate neglect of domestic animals. I enjoyed working alongside our animal control unit when checking on the welfare of animals and assisting in rescuing and transporting them to their original owner or the nearby veterinarian. On two separate occasions, I stopped traffic on a major thoroughfare (with all of my lights & hazards on) to ensure a mother duck and her ducklings safely crossed to the other side of the road. I believe pets are tangible extensions of your family. Pets also help teach us compassion, patience, and selflessness. In my experience dealing with different animals, I have learned always to ask questions and be open to learning how to do something better.
