Our K-9s are family, yours too!

Pet care experience

We are a couple in our early 40s and have been married for 19 years. Our son is thirteen and loves animals. Your dog(s) would join our two Mini Aussies for a snuggle in the house and a frolic in our good sized back yard. I am a stay-at-home mom for my son, our dogs ,and thirty-five plus rabbits. My husband delivers finished milk products for Alpenrose Dairy and enjoys working on old cars. I have had a dog since I was 5 years old and studied dog breeds as a youngster. I showed dogs and rabbits in 4-H from eighth grade to my senior year of high school. I showed sheep and rabbits in FFA (Future Farmers of America) from ninth grade to age of twenty-one. I went to Linn-Benton Community College and got my Associated of Applied Science in Animal Technology in 1998. The Animal Tech degree showed me how to judge and work with sheep, cattle, and hogs. I learned how to give shots, do Artificial Insemination, judge soils, and learn about ranches. In 2003 I got my Associates degree in Administrative Assistant. In 2000 I got my first Border Collie, Quinaby, and started her in herding ,agility, and obedience. In 2002 she had her first and only litter. We kept her son, Boomerang. After severely breaking my leg in 2001 I taught Quin all sorts of tricks during the three month I was on crutches. After Boom was 7 month old I started learning and teaching them how to do Canine Freestyle (choreographed dancing with dogs). In 2004 Quinaby, Boomerang, my little Yorkie-Poo Sunny, and Palomino rabbit Amos Moses were all certified to be Animal Assisted Therapy animals through Dove Lewis. I and the animals volunteered at a nearby assisted living and retirement community and an adult daycare facility. Currently the Border Collies are and the other two have passed away. I have two Miniature Australian Shepherds (Mini Aussies) (AKC recognizes the breed as Mini American Shepherd). My son is hoping to have Rizby as his 4-H dog and Rizby was trained to be a therapy dog but did not pass. After we put the Border Collies down September 2013 we adopted Jet. Jet came with some baggage, people fear aggression, he will not meet you immediately on a meet and greet for your safety. Jet loves other dogs. About this sitter: I am currently a stay-at-home mom with a 7th grader. I have worked in a couple veterinary clinics, pet shop, lot attendant, administrative assistant's assistant, restaurant manager of a my grandma's restaurant, airplane assembler on Thunder Mustangs, kitchen helper, and classified substitute for two local school districts. I have been a 4-H leader/member (rabbits and dogs) since 1991, a Cub Scout den leader since early 2014, and then a Boy Scout leader to current. I am the head 4-H dog leader for Puppy Pals in Washington County and 4-H rabbit leader for Scuttlebuns in Washington County and Bacon Bits n Friends in Yamhill County. Why I love dog sitting Dogs have been my passion before I could read. I was making up names for breeds until someone told me what they were or I was old enough to read them for myself. My family got our first dog Abbey when I was five from the pound. She was a Terrier mix and was my best-friend growing up. After losing her when I was in 8th grade I waited a long year for my own dog. I found in our classifieds of the newspaper with the ad "Yorkie-Poo puppies $25". I got a little wheaton colored fluffball and named her Sunny because it was a sunny Sunday. I did 4-H with Sunny and my Palomino rabbits. I also did Future Farmers of America (FFA) with my rabbits and sheep. After high school Sunny went to college with me to get my Associates in Animal Assistant Technology (Ranch Management). In 1999 I got a Border Collie from a breeder and herding competitor in Corning, California, and named her Quinaby. A few years later Quinaby had a litter of three and her eldest puppy Boomerang became ours. By the time Boomerang was two I had Sunny, Quinaby, Boomerang, and my Palomino rabbit Amos Moses certified in Animal Assistant Therapy through Dove Lewis in Portland, Oregon. Amos and Sunny died shortly after our son was born near Christmas of 2006. Easter of 2011 we brought home our Miniature Australian Shepherd, Rizby. Boomerang is the only one certified at this time with Delta Society (Dove Lewis program was disbanded). Meet my pets Chinchilla male named Mammoth that is about 8 years old. Bestie - Harlequin Dutch doe (Carston's 4-H rabbit) Peterbilt - Blue Dutch buck (Carston's 4-H and ARBA rabbit) Patriot - Blue Dutch buck (Carston's 4-H and ARBA rabbit) Chazzie - Harlequin Dutch buck (Carston's 4-H rabbit) Olallieberry - Blue Dutch doe (Carston's ARBA Champion Show rabbit) and many more Dutch Palomino rabbits... Jaxy Junuh 4 Junuh 3 Ginger May Day and many more rabbits that I show, breed, and sell. It is a commercial rabbitry so my stock rotates some like Ginger May Day are my pets. About my yard Our backyard takes up more that half of our .25 acres and is fully fenced. It has a deck, a small pond, lots of grass, 5 filbert trees, an enclosed 16 x 16 foot rabbit barn. There is lots of room for Frisbee or fetch. We have neighbor dogs but all are fully fenced in their own yards but they love to talk to each other. My experience administering medication YES, I have worked for veterinarians and as part of my degree with Ranch Management I learned how to do this. I medicate my own dogs and do their shots (of course not Rabies).

Pros: Melissa was a very communicative sitter, and took care to send pictures, and keep us up to date on our dog's stay and care. This was our dog's first time ever away from us, and she was very nervous, and not friendly to Melissa. Melissa was good about being patient and allowing her time to acclimate. She was also flexible regarding the drop-off and pickup times. The dog was fed and watered and given access to go outside as required. Cons: OK, so the first thing you MUST know is that Melissa's house is infested with fleas. In all fairness, she did warn us to put a flea treatment on our dog before visiting, however I assumed that recommendation was in order to protect against any other visiting dogs who might have fleas. We neglected to apply the treatment. When we picked our dog up, she was covered head to toe in fleas. It was so bad we had to take her directly to PetSmart and get her a flea dip. Her skin was red all over and had red blotches from the bites. The other thing you should know, as mentioned earlier, was that her house is a mess. Not quite at hoarder level, but the volume of mess was extreme. If this is an issue for you, then please avoid this sitter. Conclusion: While Melissa does care for the dogs and is a nice person overall, the flea issue is a deal breaker for me. I did not feel I was adequately warned about the fleas, and had I known, I would never have chosen her as a sitter. If you do use Melissa, by all means, use flea prevention prior to your dog's stay there.

Awful. Daisy ran out the house crying. Worst part- the sitter did not tell me she was going to be away for over six hours on both days. Melissa's house is extremely cluttered. If your dog is used to a clean and orderly household, she will probably not like it here. Melissa apparently (read in reviews below) bathes the dog before you pick her up, but Daisy smells like she got sprayed by a vanilla bean. Her food and water bowls were deplorable, almost moldy, after I had dropped them off clean. I will not be sending my dog back to this sitter.

Melissa has been an amazing sitter. I have leafy used her 3 times. The last time, the original sitter for my dog didn't show up and I called Melissa in hopes that she would have availability. She wasn't even home and dropped whatever she was doing so she could meet with me in order for me to make my flight. Melissa has a spacious backyard, a couple of dogs of her own so Rin has some furry playmates, she sends me photos/updates and gives Rin a bath before I pick her up. Really couldn't ask for anything more. Thank you, Melissa!

Amazing stay with Melissa! Both dogs got along great with her dogs and were so tired from having so much fun that they fell asleep on the car ride back. Highly recommended.

How is your dog with children and other dogs? Are they attracted to rabbits in cages? Where does your dog like to sleep?

A typical day

Here's where we'll take our walks I probably will not take your dog for a walk as we live on a very busy street but to compensate our backyard is a good portion of our .25 acres and is fully fenced. Our backyard is big enough to throw a Frisbee from my deck to the fence without it going over the fence. I also have a titanium rod and three pins in my right leg so walking on cement hurts. Your dog's sleeping arrangement That will be up to you for the most part. My dogs usually sleep in our master bedroom or my son's room. Sometimes they sleep on the couch or dog bed on the floor. I would probably recommend a crate the first night in the house until I know how your dog will behave with my household. Time I'll spend with your dog I am home much of the day and night. If I am gone it is usually for less than three hours per day. “A Typical Day for a Dog with the Becker Family” During a typical weekday, we get up around 8 am and feed dogs by 9 am (if any medicine needs to be given then they get them during this time too). From 9 am to noon my son and I do online school. We take breaks to have a chance to play/or pet the dogs and let them out and back in. During school the dogs have run of the house (at least the dining room, family room, kitchen, and bathroom (fresh supply of water in a dog bowl is available). Usually we eat lunch around noon and have some time for frolic and play. If we don’t have anywhere to go then we do chores around the house and free time with dogs. If we do we are usually not gone anymore than 3 hours at one time (may leave around 1 pm and return by 3 pm or 4 pm). Then we are generally home for dinner and playtime with dogs. Dogs that have evening dinner or meds get them here too. From 6 to 8 pm we may have a 4-H Rabbit meeting, or Cub Scout Meeting, or a sports practice (most of these are once or twice a month or sports are seasonal). If we do not have any evening activities then we are home watching tv or movies and having cuddle/playtime with dogs. My husband usually heads of for bed around 9 pm and I stay up until about 11:30 pm. When a dog comes to stay with us I ask their owner where there dog usually sleeps at home and try to accommodate them accordingly. As with sleeping arrangements I also find out what they do with their dog when they are absent from their home. If a dog uses a crate I have the owner bring it and keep the crate in my dining room or family room. I believe dogs should be around the action of the house thus in the main rooms. I do have a removable doggy door in my back sliding door that I use when I am home and the day is nice. When I leave guest dogs will be staying in the house with our two dogs. When the dogs go outside the yard is fully fenced. We had a spot near the house that a dog got over so that is boarded up and is as high as the gutters of the house. We check our fence weekly for any weaknesses that could lead to a dog escaping. We are very serious about the safety and happiness of the dogs in our care.
