Lifelong dog owner and lover

Pet care experience

I have been around dogs all my life, and currently have one of my own. Since I was about 16 years old I have cared for dogs of friends and neighbors, to include walking, overnights, and drop-ins. I even foster and volunteer for local shelters. I understand that love and play are so important for dogs that are often home alone, and will include these into my daily routine. Mental and physical exercise and stimulation will be included, and I am happy to bring along toys or my homemade puzzle games. I work with children with disabilities and their families for a living, and so I have lots of patience, great communication skills, and I understand the importance of following care instructions thoroughly and specifically. I also have lots of experience working with rescue dogs, and so I understand an animal's special needs and quirks.

Information Meggie R. would like to know about your pet

I have the most experience with herding breeds, to include Border Collies, Australian Shepherds, and Heelers. However, I don't have a problem with any breed, and am comfortable dealing with any size dog. I would like to know a dog's temperament, training level, and leash habits so I know what to be aware of when I am caring for the dog. Does he/she have any triggers or aggressions? Any special needs? Any allergies, special feeding instructions, or medications I should be aware of? What commands are used in the home? Does the dog have special harnesses, leashes, leads, or muzzles I should use? I'd also like to know what the dog enjoys! What are his/her favorite games, toys, or activities? What treats does your dog like?

A typical day

I would do research on areas local to a client's home. Otherwise, because I have my own dog, I have my favorite spots as well. I love Tanner Park, Memory Grove, Dog Lake up Millcreek Canyon, and Lindsey Gardens. Otherwise, I'm happy to take dogs around the neighborhood or on nearby hikes, depending on the dog's ability level and whether the client is looking for on or off leash exercise. As for indoor activities, I have lots of homemade puzzles and treat finding games that I enjoy making myself. Treat dispensing balls, hide and seek, and training games are all activities that I have learned through taking my own dog through training courses. Tug-of-war, fetch, and frisbee are some of my dog's personal favorite outdoor games.
