There’s an old home video of me at about two or three years old, nose-to-nose with our family’s Akita mix with her oversized, full dish in my tiny hands. “Jessie, sit!” I say commandingly. Jessie sits and I turn to put the bowl down. Jessie, thinking she can pull a fast one on me, gets up when I’m not looking. But I know what I’m doing, I whip around (kibble goes flying) and tell her to sit again. This goes on a few times until Jessie finally stays put while I put her bowl down and I tell her it’s okay to eat. I learned at a very young age how to care for dogs and teach them basic manners. I have helped care for three family dogs and finally have a pup of my own. My dog, Grace, is a rescue with a particularly traumatic background which made raising her, potty training her, and training her in general difficult. Now she is good on a leash, great with obedience, and is in exceptional health. I know it goes without saying, being on a site like this, but I love dogs!
