I’m living in townhouse and we have small patio. My kids 8 and 3 years old loves pets. We moved to USA 10 months ago and traveling often so it would irresponsible to have our own pet for now. I am happy to report that my children respect the animal's space and do not impose their touches if the cat or dog does not want it.
