I grew up in the Hudson Valley with dogs, cats, turtles, fish, birds, rabbits, goats.. the list goes on.. I am an endurance athlete and love running with canine companions. Before I could get my first dog my parents required that I spend a year volunteering at animal shelters, assisting dog trainers, and reading up on breeds and training methodologies. I delivered, and on my thirteenth birthday I adopted Alice, who was my sole charge until I left home; she is 15 now and still at it. Since then I have helped and guided many friends train their dogs. On Dogs: They call them "(hu)man's best friend" for a reason. The unconditional love that a pup provides is unparalleled. That said it's important to never treat them like humans, they are pack animals, and we need to be the leaders they see in us. Leadership of "the pack" requires confidence, a sense of direction, and a purpose through engagement. If I can help a few dogs find their purpose through running and exploring, I'll be floored. Obviously not all dogs are bred the same; I am happy to meet them where they are at.
