Walks and Home Visits by a Pet Behaviour Student!

Pet care experience

Ever since I was really young, I have been raised around dogs, cats, and other animals, but currently, I own a cat and a dog. Being surrounded by animals all my life has really made me appreciative of these creatures that walk the earth with us, and to help their quality of life more, I decided to pursue a career in animal care! I graduated from college with an Animal Management diploma. During my time at college, I earned required work experience at a doggy daycare centre for a year. There I was able to learn all about dog management. My job entailed playing and taking care of puppies, adult dogs, and slightly older dogs; I would feed them, provide them with enrichment activities, and ensure that any incidents between dogs would be dealt with appropriately. Being able to work at a doggy daycare taught me a great deal about different dog temperaments and has made me more confident when dealing with more ‘challenging’ dogs, and when dealing with potential dog fights or reactive behaviours. I am currently in my second year of university, taking an Animal Management degree, specialising in Pet Behaviour and Welfare. The degree I am taking allows me to learn all about an animal’s behaviour, and really goes into depth about training animals, whether it be a dog, cat, or wild animal. Using the training experience I have acquired from this course, I am also willing to attempt to train your pet on a basic level if desired by the owner. I also tend to pet sit a family friend’s dog, extending my personal experience when taking care of dogs. Please be aware that if you are looking to book a service with me, my scheduling may be a bit tight due to university! Let’s work together to figure out the best time for the service :).

Thank you Maria for sending us such great reports on your walks, and for being patient with our girl as she gets used to a new walker.

Maria was great checking in on my dog Evie. She asked all the relevant questions before hand and I have subsequently booked more visits with her. Thanks Maria! ?

I reached out to Maria with a relatively short notice and she was not only super quick to answer but very friendly and reliable. She arrived on time on the day and I felt very much at ease leaving my dog Papu with her. Thanks to Maria I could enjoy my sister’s wedding without having to worry about my dog. She also sent me an update and clearly Papu was having no trouble relaxing in Maria’s company. ? Will definitely rebook Maria if we ever need a sitter in London again. Many thanks again for looking after Papu! ?

I am able to perform medical tasks on pets as long as a clear explanation and/or demonstration is provided. If your cat tends to go outside, I am able to let them out into the garden and keep a close eye on them if need be. If the pet has special dietary requirements I will follow them. If you would not like your dog playing with sticks or pebbles please do let me know. Please also let me know if your pet has any behavioural problems, whether that be an anxious dog/cat, or reactiveness towards other pets or people.

Information Maria L. would like to know about your pet

Please let me know if your dog has: * Medical and physical conditions * Behavioural problems (reactiveness towards other dogs or people) * Dietary Requirement (e.g allergies) * If they are food/toy/resource aggressive * If your dog is able to go off-lead (and if you would like me to allow off-leash time)

A typical day

Taking walks with a dog is my favourite thing. No matter the dog’s breed and their energy level, I’ll be able to accommodate by playing around with them, throwing their ball, and even allow some off leash time for enrichment via exploration. Not to worry if your dog can’t be off lead but you would still like for them to get that exploration; I can provide a long training lead that can give them enough room. On request, I may also work on basic training with your dog to teach them basic tricks and other things (please so keep in mind that I am not yet a professional trainer, only using personal experiences). If there is something that you would like to train your dog on, feel free to let me know! I would be more than happy to help with training. After walks and during home visits, I can also provide them with enrichment (often food enrichment, unless the dog has dietary requirements) in the form of lick mats, snuffle mats, and puzzles, that can help them wind down and relax. For home visits, enrichment can be just as good as a walk outside for your dog.

Availability

As I am currently a second year university student, I will be able to walk your pet or perform visits between lessons and after. On Monday, the latest my lectures finish is at 2pm. Tuesdays are my free day. On Wednesdays and Thursdays, my lectures finish at 3pm. My schedule on Friday is not set yet, but I am also able to work then. I am more than willing to do walks and home visits on weekends if needs be required, but I do tend to go back to home to London to visit family on most weeks.
