It’s super important to know what a dog DOESN’T like to do before you start any interaction with them. I would definitely let the dog get familiar with my scent. Also how they react around other animals and people is a biggie. I know my dog does NOT like to be pet on the head by anyone he isn’t familiar with.
A typical day
A Fun thing to do is play fetch. Even if a dog isn’t familiar with retrieving a stick or ball they soon catch on because it’s a great way to interact and bond. Usually when a dog sees you are enthusiastic and engaged the follow suit.

Availability
Every morning and early evening, it has always been an automatic routine every day to walk my dog at least twice daily. Even if weather is a factor I make a point to get their walks in.
