Home Away from Home.

Pet care experience

Hello! My name is Mandy, and I have a lifetime worth of experience with pets, as we've always had dogs and cats as I was growing up. I am also an approved foster home for dogs through Friends of the Shelter in Newcastle. In our home with my son, Harper (14), and daughter, Charley (11), we have one Catahoula-Australian Shepherd mix, Sansa (7); an Aussie mutt mix, Ayra (4), and three cats: Littles (17), Pumpkin (12), and Peter Venkman Sir Fancy Pants (7)--all rescues. Harper and Charley love helping with our pets. They feed and water them every morning and evening; play fetch, tug-of-war, and their version of tag, which is mostly them running from dogs, as well as maintaining a "waste-free" backyard. They also love taking The Girls on evening walks.

Mandy is always responsible and friendly with my 2 yorkies. She knows how to read the dogs’ cues and respond appropriately. She’s always gentle and kind with any dog (or cat) that I’ve seen her interact with and she’s extremely knowledgeable about animal behavior and nature. 10/10 highly recommend.

Mandy's sense of responsibility and attention to detail is surpassed only by her love of animals. Rather than worrying what kind of care your dog will receive, Mandy is the type of person to return your dog in perhaps better shape than you left it. If you're looking for someone with an abundance of love, caution, and care, Mandy is an ideal candidate to be your dog's caregiver.

Mandy is a very dependable and caring pet owner, traits that I've seen accentuated in the past few years with her affection for shelter dogs and adoption offers. I've been able to see a distinct change in the pets she has taken into her home, a testament to her dedication and nurturing nature. Throughout the years, Mandy's pets have always been happy, healthy, and loved. She would certainly be my top choice for a dog sitter and caregiver!

I have Doberman named Wednesday and a doxie named Chanel, both of whom are like children to me. I trust about three people to watch my dogs, and Mandy is at the top of my list. She is loving and caring and responsible. Highly recommend her!

Safety, trust & environment

*Boarding* For doggos staying with us, we require an Introduction Ritual at our home before we (you, me, the dogs) all agree our home is a good and safe fit for your doggo to hang out at while you're away. I do a pack walk around the block (more if necessary) to ensure a safer and easier transition for you pup, and ours, into our territory. You ever walk into a room blindly? I like dogs to be prepared. After the walk, I slowly move into the yard, then the backyard, and pretty soon, my dog and yours will be like long-lost friends. As I said above, we ensure the safety of your pup by eliminating daytime encounters with The Girls. We don't do this because it's necessary but just to make sure that on the off-chance a squirmish occurs an adult is there to handle the situation. During the day, pups get outside as specified by you. Bathroom break once an hour? You got it. An 30 minutes or an hour to bask in the sunshine once or twice before I get home? No problem. Water breaks from the hard day's napping? Obviously. Stay hydrated, beautiful. We have a fenced yard (stockade) where doggos safely romp and play. There are plenty of shading areas to cool down and take a nap in the soft breeze. There are several water stations where I keep the fresh libations flowing (don't worry. They're virgin H2Os). They are not left unattended in the backyard for more than 5 minutes at a time. This is to ensure someone doesn't have play misinterpreted and a doggie throw-down occurs. The Girls are herders. They start play with new friends by poking the other's sides with the occasional haunch nip. These are not painful (I can vouch for this) and really almost never occur. Arya's kind of a dingbat and gets overly excited sometimes. We all know that one person, right? Once the recipient understands this is play, the rolling and romping begins. To ensure food aggression does not occur, everyone eats their two meals in their crates. Except Sansa, because she's an OG, and, coincidentally, Queen in the North. (When it's hot and muggy, we can all dream.) She also loses her composure in a crate. Stay wild, Moon Child. Starting out, doggos are crated at night and when we leave the house. If we determine pups are non-destructive, they will not be crated at night. When we are gone, crating is necessary to prevent ruff-housing (see what I did there?) while the cat's away. We will never be gone more than a few hours, if it all. Our outings usually only include errands such as grocery shopping, running to Ace Hardware to get something for a project, or going down the street to the farmer's market. In the evenings, we lounge around and watch TV. Doggos lay around with us, chewing on bones or getting their last wrestling match in. This usually makes for sound sleeping. **For your pet's safety,** please provide a harness and/or collar that prevents your pup from backing out of the collar during a walk (such as a Martingale collar). If you prefer that you pup is not walked, then those are not needed. They get a lot of exercise playing in the backyard. Leash required regardless. *A note on Sansa* Sansa is a dogs, dog. People? Not so much. As previously stated, she is queen. Per her breed, she is very protective over the realm and her people. The introductory pack walk does more for her in regards to getting to know her new friend's people are safe, just as much as it helps her get to know her new friend. When meeting Sansa, do not make eye contact or attempt to pet her. Ignore her completely. She will let you know by sniffing you if or when she is ready to gradually begin knowing you. I know that sounds like "Whoa, no thank you," but she really just wants her space and respect. She runs a well-oiled realm, I assure you. Ignore her, and she'll ignore you. Arya, on the other hand, might give you the keys to the castle and help you load your wagon with our goods. We can't all be perfect.

Information Mandy K. would like to know about your pet

*Doggos must get along with other dogs and kids. They don't have to love cats but they cannot be reactive toward cats. *Doggos are required to be crate and house trained and up to date on shots and flea/tick meds. Please provide a copy of vet/clinic records. *Doggos should know some basic commands, like sit and "no." This just helps keep some order. Sansa runs a well-oiled realm. I run a tight shipwreck. *Is your dog a chewer? No problem. Bring your pup's favorite chew toy. We also have Kongs and bones to help, but Arya is pretty selfish. *It is necessary for pet parents to let me know if there are any special requests or needs prior to the arrangement date to ensure I can accommodate those needs. *We love to go for walks. Please provide safety equipment, such as a collar and/or harness that he/she cannot back out of and a leash. If you do not want your doggo walked, please let me know. *We do not hang out with unneutered males or unspayed females. I mean, all they want to talk about is sex. It's exhausting. *We only hang out with potty trained puppies. *Life happens. We get it. If you are unable to fulfill the previously agreed upon date and time, please let me know as soon as you can. Accommodations can be arranged within reason. *If your dog drags you to the ground, don't get me involved. I'm too old for a broken hip.

A typical day

On weekends, I'm an early riser. I get up, let everyone out in the back, make my coffee, then go sit out in the back with The Girls. The Girls run around the perimeter and ensure Gertie and George Costanza, our backyard toads, haven't caused any issues overnight. Usually checks out. If the human kids are not up by 9:00 a.m., I feed everyone the morning meal. Much to Arya's chagrin, I'm not as heavy on the pour as the kids. After breakfast, depending on preference, it's back outside. Sansa, the Machine, wants to stalk squirrels (they stalked her first!). Arya is a lazy girl and likes to stay inside. So we let her. How's your doggo? Are they an innie or an outie? This goes on pretty much all day. The backyard is large, so they have plenty of room to run and play. In the summers, we fill up a hard plastic kiddie pool so doggos can cool off. Around morning/daytime/evening walks in our neighborhood and on the walking trails near our house. Most walks will occur in the morning and evening. Evening times comes the dinner bell again and some evening outdoor lounging. Inside lounging in front of the TV with some treats before bedtime.

*Boarding* I work Monday - Friday, between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. While I work full time, my capable kiddos are home during the day. They are well-versed in the care of pets and manage the responsibilities for ours almost 100 percent as well as helping out through our foster group. While I am working, pups are crated indoors in climate controlled rooms with a cushy place to relax, toys, and low music. Doggos will receive frequent and private (without other dogs) potty and water breaks throughout the day. If you do not mind, the kids can also give some private play breaks in the backyard. When I am home, pups will spend time romping, splashing in the doggie pool (when warmer outside) and playing in our large backyard with The Girls (who love playing with new doggos), chewing on bones and toys in the house on cushy doggie beds while watching FRIENDS reruns, and going for walks in the cool mornings and evenings. *Walking* During the week, I we can go for walks in the mornings between 6:00 - 7:00 a.m. and in the evenings between 6:00 and 8:00 p.m. On weekends, we can accomodate a more flexible schedule. *Drop-Ins* Monday - Friday I am available to drop in between 6:00 a.m. and 7:15 a.m. in the morning then 5:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. in the evenings. If pup is staying home alone for a few days, I like to come three times and spend about 30 minutes each time. However, if you prefer a different arrangement, I am open. Saturday & Sunday is more flexible. Drop-ins start at 6:00 a.m. and end at 10:00 p.m. Since I don't have anywhere I need to be except with your doggo, these can be anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour each time. *Daycare* Doggie daycare is only available on Saturdays and Sundays. Doggos can be dropped off anytime in the morning but must be picked up before 8:00 p.m.
