I have had dogs around me my whole life. I received a dog of my own when I was 11 years old. She was the runt of the litter and was only a pound and a half. Therefore I needed to keep a very close eye on her and treat her with a light hand. She is now 15 years old and still in very good health. I feel dogs are part of the family.
