Animal lover and rescuer

Pet care experience

I’ve loved animals since I discovered object permanence. When I was 15, finally managed to convince my parents to rescue a Miniature Schnauzer, only having had fish and gerbils up until then. (Unfortunately, he passed away in the summer of 2022 due to old age.) At 19, I started working at a doggy daycare. At 20, I began fostering dogs for multiple local rescues. At 22, I was fostering cats as well, and now at 23, I have been made part of the Board of Directors at the Lower Mainland Humane Society. I am experienced with all sizes, ages, breeds, and temperaments of dogs, cats, and even some reptiles. I have experience with sick pets, giving them medication, have extra room in case they need to be segregated or quarantined, and have multiple connections in the vet and animal behaviourist industry should your vet be unavailable. Currently, I have a 1 year old GSD/Husky/Pittie mix, Kovu, who has undergone training with me, is crate trained, potty trained, neutered, and submissive, but large. I am also fostering a Maine Coon mix, and own a snake who is content staying put in his secure terrarium. I believe in force-free training, would never use a prong/shock collar, understand body language and cues, and do my utmost to respect you as a pet owner and your pet as a living being.

Kristen has always been amazing with my special needs frenchie who has IVDD. He absolutely adores her and she is so affectionate and gentle with him. She truly loves and cares for animals and that is so obvious in the way she cares for my little guy and how much he loves to be with her. I fully trust her with my fur baby and my house and would recommend Kristen to anyone looking for excellent care for their beloved pet!

We feel very lucky to have found Kristen. Our dog (~1.5 years old Chihuahua mix) is quite anxious, has separation anxiety and is friendly with dogs, but is leash reactive. Kristen was able to meet all of our dog’s needs and we feel comfortable leaving him with her. We have used Kristen on a couple of different occasions and our dog is always eager to greet her and seems relaxed upon pick up. Kristen is quick to respond to all messages and provided updates during our dog’s stays including pictures and videos. Kristen was also very open to a meet and greet before our first booking so our dogs could meet and ensure they got along. We will continue to re-book with Kristen as long as she is available and willing to watch our dog!

So nice to be able to go away on business and not have to worry about my pup as she is in good hands! Lola loved her stay!

Kristen took care of my pup like she was her own. It was also great for my dog to interact with her's in a controlled environment. They got along great and I couldn't be happier!

I never let dogs off leash unless I am very familiar with them, you’ve authorized it, and we’re in a designated off leash area. I follow instructions meticulously, am familiar with administering medicine and some emergency procedures. I have multiple connections in the veterinary care industry and behaviourists from my rescue work who are always available should anything happen and your contacts are unavailable. I understand pet health and behaviour and that situations like allergies, food aggression, resource guarding, and reactivity may arise. I am perfectly comfortable and equipped to handle this by feeding animals separately, maintaining cleanliness, watching them carefully when they play, and de-escalating situations before anyone has the chance to snap. Let's set our pets up for success!

Information Kristen H. would like to know about your pet

Please let me know if there is anything that I need to be aware of such as leash reactivity, special commands, ongoing training, allergies, a specific schedule you have for them, fear or nervousness, rules that you have (not allowed on my bed, for example), medical requirements, or appointments that you would like me to attend with them. I would be happy to discuss and try to accommodate you and your pet to the best of my ability, respectfully.

A typical day

If you have a very social dog, I would be more than happy to take them to Barnet Marine Park nearby. It's a beautiful off-leash dog park with white sand beaches and only one entrance by which dogs can access the road. Otherwise, I love playing enriching games with my dog and understand that working breeds must chew, sniff, or use their brains. I have puzzle toys, snuffle mats, a huge amount of milkbones, and nylabones that I can use or hide around the house for them to find and enjoy. I also love making dog treats such as frozen stuffed kongs, peanut butter cookies, pupcakes and frozen fruits/veggies soaked in broth.

I am currently a student at Capilano University and all my courses are done online for 1.5 hours at a time. I am not currently working, so I stay home with my animals all day every day, much to their delight (or disdain, in the case of spicy cats). My dog sleeps in bed with me with the option of going in his crate or in the hallway, but not out in the common area. I have a baby gate at the entrance of my hallway with a ~4”-5" gap that only very small dogs would be able to squeeze underneath. I live on Burnaby Mountain, so Kovu and I have the luxury of walking around lots of greenery, low traffic areas, and pet friendly parks nearby.
