I'll Be Your Dog's New Best Friend

Pet care experience

James and I have raised our dog, Kara Beara, the Shiba Inu since she was a puppy 11 years ago. We love our little Kara but we also love travelling which always caused us a great deal of stress when we were faced with the situation of needing to find a good place for Kara to stay while we were away. We’ve been very fortunate over the years to have always had a friend or family member take Kara into their home. While away we always appreciated receiving regular updates and pictures of what Kara is up to. So we certainly understand how difficult it is to arrange good care of your dog during a vacation. We joined Dog Vacay (Rover) about three years ago because we strongly believe in the premise of having a dog stay in a loving home environment. It’s been a really positive experience for all 3 of us. Every dog has its own unique personality and cute little quirks that we get to know. Kara gets along with most dogs and we like that she has company when we’re at work. It has also been very endearing to see how well Kara shares with her dog guests, she is never bothered when another dog lies in her favourite bed, plays with her toys, or goes into her doggy tent. James and I both really enjoy having another dog at home and we love taking them on adventures (hiking, snowshoeing, or walks). Since moving to North Van we have taken full advantage of having a fenced yard and have lots of fun playing fetch, as well as watching the dogs run and play. James and I stagger our work schedules a bit. James is usually home with the dogs until about 9:00am and I usually get home around 4:30pm On occasion James works from home. We typically take Kara out 3-4 times per day and she pretty much enjoys the free run of our home. She has several dog beds, a dog tent, and enjoys spending time on the couch and on our the patio (she loves to nap and sunbath). She also has a ton of toys that she is happy to share. We like to keep active and regularly hit the trails. Our home is very dog friendly. There are never treats or any mischief dogs could get into as we are extremely vigilant with that. Kara is also terrible off leash so when it comes to being strict with walking on a leash at all times, we have been living this life for 11 years and can be trusted with the most evasive dog (which we believe is our little Kara). If your dog stays with us please note that we have plenty of dog beds, food/water bowls, dog toys, and dog towels. All we ask for you to bring is your pet, his or her regular food, leash, and collar/harness. We also appreciate knowing about any allergies your pet may have and vet information in case of an emergency. If your dog has a favourite bed or blanket that you think will make them feel more comfortable you are welcome to bring it for them. Of note, we generally only host one dog guest at a time. On occasions we consider hosting two at a time. Feel free to send us a message should you want to know more or if you'd like to set up a meet and greet.

Krista and James are the best dog sitters in the area! I left my 1 year old Shiba Inu with them for a week without any worries. They are responsible, caring people who had sent us photos with daily updates which was great. I can definitely recommend Krista and James to anybody (especially Shiba Inu owners) and would leave my dog with them again :) Thank you again for exceeding our dog sitting needs, Gohan had the best time!

Krista and James were wonderful to work with. Easy to get a hold of and sent lots of videos and photos to us. Our dog had a great time and was very well cared for. Will definitely see if they are free for future needs.

Krista and James did a fantastic job with my dog - they constantly sent me pictures, kept her well exercised and made her feel welcome at their home. I would highly recommend them. Thanks again for doing such a great job.

We like to know what type of food they eat (dry food or raw food) and their regular schedule for going out and eating. Through Rover we are getting to know several different dog breeds. Our favourites so far include Corgis, Collies, Aussie Shepards, French Bulldogs, Austrailian Kelpies, Labradoodles, Shiba Inus, but of course this list is always growing and we love getting to know different breeds.

A typical day

There is lots of opportunity for dogs to play in the fenced yard. We love dogs that play fetch. We are fortunate to be close to many trails. Depending on the season after work we may walk around the neighbourhood, or head to the local trails walking distance from our home. On the weekend we usually have time for longer hikes in the local mountains (or snowshoeing in the winter).
