Pet care experience
**I look young but I am actually 29!** I will treat your pets like my own! I currently offer Boarding, House Sitting, Walks, and Drop In Visits. See below for requirements. Requirements for Boarding: Able to be crated for short periods of time MUST be confirmed cat-safe: I can't take large dogs that have never been around cats Up-to-date on vaccines dog-friendly *If your dog is not a good fit for boarding, I am happy to take care of him or her at your house!* Services: --Focused walks for reactive dogs --Conditioning for new walking equipment (head halters, muzzles, etc) --Focused walks for any dog! --Drop in services for ALL kinds of animals --Boarding --House sitting Grooming: --Baths, brushing, deshedding, nail trims --I do not shave or cut hair My life has always been about animals. I have owned dogs with a range of temperaments and am experienced with training both manners and correcting behavioral problems using fear-free techniques. I worked for 2 years as a veterinary assistant in a mixed-animal practice and 3 years (current position) as a PhD candidate in a lab studying the genetics of equine and canine behavior and disease at the University of Minnesota. Growing up, I always had dogs, cats, reptiles & amphibians, fish, small mammals (rabbits, rodents, ferrets, hedgehogs), and horses. As a young adult, I gained experience with common farm animals including chickens, sheep, goats, and turkeys. Due to my experience in vet med, I am able to administer medications (including injections) and provide senior care or care for animals with special needs. I have worked with dog-aggressive and dog-reactive dogs extensively and am experienced handling them. In addition, I have studied under a veterinary behavior specialist and have a solid foundation in canine behavior. Because of these experiences, I am able to train puppies and work with adult dogs in need of an education as well. I offer a focused-walk service. The purpose of a focused walk is to stimulate your dog mentally and promote good behavior. Your dog will spend the half hour walk doing on-and-off training exercises to teach leash manners, attention-span, and obedience. The frequency and length of exercises depends on your dog's age and current training level. I also offer these types of walks for reactive dogs, where counter-conditioning is the main focus. Counter-conditioning is the practice of associating something a dog is afraid of (other dogs, cars, etc) with something positive (usually food or play). Over time, counter-conditioning can improve your dog's reactivity and get him or her feeling more comfortable when faced with the sight of another dog, a car, or any other animals, people, or things he or she may be reactive towards.
Reviews
Kirsten did an amazing job caring for our dogs while we were away. She communicated with me daily, sending pictures and videos so I knew my dogs were doing well. We will definitely use Kirsten the next time we go out of town.
Kirsten took amazing care of our elderly diabetic cat. She seemed to care for him like he was her own. She understood his medical needs and made great decisions about while she cared for him. Thank you, Kirsten!
Great communication, took great care of our special needs cat!!
Kirsten was a very good dog sitter, experienced with all animals and very attentive to their needs. I would happily use her services again when the need arises. My two small dogs were happy and healthy with her, and I am thankful for her animal knowledge and loving manner toward them.

I have one friendly senior dog and one dog friendly senior cat. Dogs under my care will be supervised at all times in my home or in a crate when I am not home. I have a fenced yard for supervised play. In your home and when I have your dog in mine, I will strictly follow all of the guidelines you give me. For walks, dogs will be double-leashed at all times and I can provide as many walks in a day as is typical for your dog. If training or grooming services are needed, only fear-free techniques will be applied. I am a major proponent of conditioning dogs to new situations, equipment, and experiences..

Information Kirsten D. would like to know about your pet
Important Note: Your dog must be up to date on all vaccines, including bordetella. I would prefer your dog also be vaccinated for dog flu. This is to protect my resident pets. For any new dog, I will need to know the following things: Does your dog have any behavioral concerns Is your dog aggressive or reactive? Has your dog been around cats and is confirmed cat-safe? Is your dog crate trained? What medications does your dog take and what health conditions does he or she have? Each dog I consider for daycare or overnight boarding will undergo a meet-and-greet on neutral ground to ensure the safety of my resident pets. For walks, I will need to know ahead of time if you would like a focused-walk or regular walk for leisure.
A typical day
On weekdays, walks will typically be in the neighborhood or through the Oakdale Nature Preserve. Walks can either be purely for leisure or they can be focused-walks. Please see my description for more details on focused-walks. Besides walks, your dog will be able to hang out with me while I work in my office or relax with me in the living room. I take regular breaks during the work day either for walks or playtime. My senior dog is still an enthusiastic playmate as well. Additionally, supervised time to play in the yard will be provided. On weekends, I will happily take your dog hiking (on a leash) if you are comfortable with it.

I work remotely most days. Occasionally I need to be gone or a few hours. Your pet will only be alone for short periods in my care and will get plenty of play time in the yard and walks as needed. :)
