Dog Trainer At Your Service

Pet care experience

Greetings! My name is Kay. Let me tell you a little bit about myself. I have loved animals for as long as I can remember, and even as a child, I knew I wanted to have a career based on that love. I grew up on Animal Planet, and spent my time studying everything about animals, from Herpetology, the study of reptiles and amphibians, to Cynology, the study of Canines. I’ve cared for pets for my entire life, and there was never a time when my home wasn’t filled with the sounds of birds chirping, Guinea Pigs squeaking, cats meowing, or dogs barking. From 0-8 legs, I’ve had them all, including mice, hamsters, various lizards and snakes, frogs, fish, turtles, and even insects. Out of everything that I have loved, no relationships have brought me greater joy than the ones I have fostered with my dogs, and so I have devoted my life to the care and study of the Canine, including aspects such as general health, nutrition, disease and illness, behavior, and obedience. As a professional Dog Trainer, I have had the opportunity to work with a variety of dogs, as well as people. I regularly train puppies, pure and mixed breed dogs, and seniors, and I have assisted people with house-training, training a deaf dog, dealing with behavior issues, trauma, and medical diagnoses. I have experience with hunting dogs, Guard/Patrol dogs, ESA’s, large and small breeds, and all ages, and I am looking forward to getting to know your dog too. My schedule varies depending on the needs of my clients, and I travel from Little Elm to McKinney to Trenton on a regular basis for training sessions, drop ins, or walks. Exercise is a big part of my daily routine, and I'm more than happy to bring your dog along for the run. There are many things that dogs need in order to be not only happy, but healthy as well. I believe proper animal husbandry requires a foundation of knowledge on aspects such as Animal Behavior, diet and nutrition, health, exercise, and general wellness. When I take care of a pet, I am taking care of more than just food and water. I regularly check my own dogs for parasites, both external and internal, perform basic procedures such as ear cleaning, tooth brushing, nail trimming, and scan them for medical issues. When I visit your house, I will keep my eyes open for parasites, injuries, behavioral issues, and potential environmental hazards, while feeding, watering, exercising, and playing with your dog. I think exercise and play time are huge factors in a dog's quality of life, and I will make it my mission to ensure that your dog gets plenty of both. As a professional Dog Trainer, I also believe a happy dog is a well trained dog, and I would be happy to offer any necessary training assistance or tips while I’m there!

I met Kay while seeking a dog trainer for our new family member Oakley. Kay immediately captured our attention with her knowledgeable approach to training and helping us communicate better with Oakley. In our time together, Kay showed herself to be very considerate of Oakley’s temperament and caring when training outside to make sure we didn’t work too long or too hard. After 8 weeks of training, Oakley was a completely different dog. I would recommend Kay to anyone looking for training or pet care. Her knowledge is second to none and she has proven herself to me to be someone that truly cares about the well-being of animals entrusted to her care.

Kawena has worked with me and my puppy, Rocky, through basic obedience training. She has shown a great deal of patience with me and handles Rocky with confidence. He responds well to her and is always very excited to see her. If and when we need a sitter I would trust her with my all of my dogs implicitly.

We have a young hunting dog with a ton of energy. Kawena has helped us to train her on basics like sit, stay and heel among many other things. She has been available for questions during the week when we need help with things that aren’t part of our training. She has been very helpful and our puppy is much more enjoyable now that she has learned some manners and we have been taught how to train her.

Kawena (Kay) is super knowledgeable about dogs, dog behavior and pack theory. She is a great handler / trainer and goes above and beyond to ensure owners and dogs understand each other. She is caring and responsible. Highly recommend!

Information Kawena R. would like to know about your pet

The more information you can give me, the better. However there are some things that are at the top of my list. I need to know your dogs history- especially as it relates to your dogs mental status. Let me know if your dog has any behavioral issues, trauma, fears, or anything else. Don't worry, I can easily work around most things. But it is helpful to know ahead of time, so I can plan the days activities appropriately and ensure everyone, especially your dog, has a great day. I need to know about any, and all medical concerns, be it allergies, old injuries or surgeries, or a lifelong medical condition. I am easily able to provide medication or first aid if necessary. However, the last thing I want to do is take a dog out for a jog, not knowing about her bad hip, and cause her pain or additional injury. So please let me know, so that I can make your dog comfortable. I am familiar with most breeds and their individual needs, but your personal input is always welcome. I would also love any information you can provide related to your dogs preferences, likes and dislikes, training, or skills. If your dog prefers frisbees over tennis balls, let me know which to bring. If you prefer anything, let me know about that as well. This might include information such as when and how much to feed your dog, the kind of treats and pampering you allow, or whether or not you want your dog on any furniture, or on carpeted floors only.

A typical day

Dogs love to play, and so do I. Games like fetch, Frisbee, soccer, and "find it"are great for more than just exercise though! Many can be used to stimulate your dogs mind and get him or her thinking, problem solving, and learning while having loads of fun, and burning off loads of energy at the same time. And it's not hard to add in a little training to the games as well. Fetch can be used to teach a dog how to willingly drop items, soccer can be used to teach a dog to mind his movements and "find it" is a great way to keep your dog busy for hours while playing on his desires to track or hunt. Even a simple walk or jog can be used to teach a dog to mind his leash. Every dog is different however, and it's up to you to tell me what your dog likes to do. Some dogs don't enjoy games as much as others, and might prefer a low impact walk instead. It all depends on the individual needs of the pup in question.
