I love all kinds of pets!

Pet care experience

Hi, I'm Kat (feel free to make all the cat/kitten puns), and I love pretty much all animals. I've always been one of the go-to people for my friends and family to watch their pets since I was in high school. My experience has only increased as I've gotten older and have my own pets; two plucky, adorable cats, as well as my roommate's dog. I've had plenty of experience with drop-in visits, staying overnight/house-sitting, and taking pets out for walks and hikes. I have plenty of experience giving medications to cats and dogs with oral syringes, or hiding meds in food/treats. My roommate and her cousin, who lives in our building, both have dogs, so it's not unusual for them to ask me to take them out, and play with them (well they don't ask, I just like to give them extra attention), as well as serve dinner and medication. I'm used to watching pets of all sizes and temperaments, and I like to take my time to get to know a pet/ let them get used to me before "jumping in." I've watched plenty of animal behaviorist shows and read a few books on the subject as well. It's not unusual for me to hear "Wow, my pet normally doesn't warm up to people that fast!" or "I'm impressed, my pet really likes you!" Cats and other pets that enjoy time outside of the house don't phase me either as I've trained both of my cats to wear a harness and leash/ collar and leash. As long as the proper equipment for going outside is available, then let's go out and explore!

I felt so comfortable leaving our dogs with Kat for the weekend. She sent us frequent updates and photos and treated our home with respect. When she came over for a meet and greet, our dogs took to her instantly. (One can be hard to warm up to.) 10/10 will book with Kat again!

Safety, trust & environment

Please note that I have a 15-20 questionnaire I ask ALL clients to fill out prior to services to provide the best care for your pets, as well as a way to cover myself and the owner to the best of our knowledge, abilities, and due diligence! I also strongly prefer meeting you and your pets in home to see your pets in their most relaxed environment prior to services! I really got a crash course in handling a not-so-happy pet, when one of my cats was diagnosed with IBD and food allergies. Unfortunately, taking him for numerous vet visits and giving pills and liquid medication isn't uncommon in our household. And after twice finding out he was allergic to medications, I learned how to treat and care for open wounds. This has come in handy several times when dealing with an injured bird I rescued, helping treat my roommate's cousin's dog's paw when it stepped on glass, and helping care for a friend's cat with an abscess. I do my best to be patient with each animal I care for and learn their different personality quirks. However, I'm fully able to assert myself as the "human in charge" in every situation so I'm the one controlling the outcome. Again because I've been able to read body language well, I have never been maliciously bitten or scratched. I'm all about positive reinforcement, and if there is a situation where 'feathers get ruffled' such as needing to clip nails or brush teeth or give meds, etc, do my best to follow up with treats, play time, or pets.

Information Kathiryne B. would like to know about your pet

It's important that you fill out your and your pets' profiles so I have an idea of what kind of care they need as well as necessary information. Prior to scheduling a Meet & Greet, I have a questionnaire I send out that should be filled out. If the meeting cannot be done at your home, please note that I require a home visit prior to confirming a booking. If you want me to try/ reinforce training for tricks or actions, I will need to know the details, and have access to any equipment and any motivational foods/toys. I know basic first aid when it comes to cleaning and can administer oral medication to pets. I am able to administer injectables as long as I'm shown where on the body and how deep (sub-q vs intramuscular). I have a basic first-aid kit that I will keep in my car (Betadine or povidone-iodine is used instead of stinging isopropyl alcohol/ hydrogen peroxide). Lastly, unless specifically requested ahead of time, all items related to care of your pets should be provided by you as the owner. I may bring over toys or treats that I use with other pets, but those will be discussed beforehand. If you would like me to buy/ bring over items/equipment of my own, I will modify the booking to factor it into the final total.

A typical day

When I first come in to check on a pet, I will greet them and pay the necessary petting tax. Afterward, I like to check if their food and water needs to be filled up. Then it's usually time for a walk or playtime. Ideally, I like to take different routes based on the pet's ability and energy level. If the owner is okay with it and the dog's temperament allows, I may go to a dog park for off-leash time. Whenever I do this I make sure to bring a ball/fav toy to play fetch with, and a good pair of running shoes to play chase. If it's food time, I'll give them their breakfast/lunch/dinner. Any medication would be given at the specified times before/after dinner depending. Then it's time to empty litter boxes and clean up. At this time I usually like to play more with the pet so they're good and tuckered for bed. Personally, my cats are harness and leash trained, and they enjoy going on "walks" in the hallway/clubhouse of the apartment or exploring and hanging around outside. When I first get in the evening to see them, it's time to say hello and give pets. Then I'm grabbing new food and water bowls or washing and drying them. Cats tend to operate best on a routine of "Hunt, Catch, Kill, Eat, Groom, and Sleep," so I try to give playtime/walk/ use up energy by allowing them to observe everything on the balcony. Afterward, it's time for dinner. Then because my cats are high enough energy, we do another round of play/walk/balcony before it's time to relax and prep for bed.

I'm fortunate to have a flexible schedule that allows me to take a long lunch, as well as being able to work 6 hours in office and my remaining hours remotely. I have open availability on the weekends, and for drop-in visits & walks, I'm able to stop by in the morning, afternoon, and evening. Should a situation arise where your pet would need to come with me to work (of course cleared by you first!), I have my own office space that I can close off so it's just your pet and myself, plenty of green spaces outside for potty breaks, and a park a couple of blocks down for walks/ outside playtime.
