I've grown up with dogs (thank you, mom and dad)! I've had a variety of breeds, i.e. Alaskan Husky, Malamute, Golden Lab, Pit-bull, and a mixed mutt breed. All of them had wildly different personalities and all loved equally. I consider dogs family members more than just pets! It's a bit of a competition, who loves who more, the pet or the owner?! :) I also live a very active and healthy lifestyle so taking dogs for a run/walk or playing fetch, etc. would be equally beneficial!
