Doggies Dream Days

Pet care experience

I have spent most of my working life in the NHS as a nurse and midwife. However since going part time in 2019 I have realised my true love is looking after animals, mainly dogs, I have done voluntary work at a number or rescue centres including Guernsey RSPCA, Teckels and OSPA . Maybe it’s my nursing background but I am naturally drawn to animals and dogs with complex illnesses and disabilities. My own, beautiful , spirited and amazing border collie Janja was paraplegic from an early age. We had a trolley made for her and she would walk and run for miles everyday. She was incontinent wore nappies indoors and often needed bowel care , but never let it get her down. We went everywhere together, and completed a number of fun runs. I spend my holidays at a rescue centre in Cape Verde , where my sponsor dog , Braco lives. She has a deformed front leg but walks really well. I also spend a lots of time with Icca a paraplegic dog out there who inherited Janjas harness and equipment. I m used to walking for hours every day , come wind or sun and find that dogs seem to come up to me just for a stoke and a cuddle, even if I haven’t met them before . I must look like a soft touch. I’m happy to walk up to three dogs at a time but prefer to be able to give quality time and attention to individual dogs since it is their walk. I have done day care in the past or in an emergency, but think it’s only fair on the dog that they already know me through having at least a couple of walks together. I would love to meet you and you dog(s ) and go for a trial walk together . I am a dog lover , not a business so every walk will be at least an hour and if the dog wants it the extra 30 mins or so won’t be charged

Simba had a lovely time with Julia. She kept me updated and looked after him perfectly. He was absolutely wiped out when he came back!

Great first meeting with Julia. My cocker spaniel, Monty, is quite nervous and normally takes many visits by new people before he accepts them into his home. Couldn’t believe that Julia was stroking him within minutes! Julia was very patient with him when he wasn’t sure about leaving the house with her. It might take a few visits before he’s settled but Julia has been very accommodating and clearly has a way with animals :)

Medical needs. Recall. Are you happy for your dog to be off lead? I would keep a dog on lead until trust and recall had been established. Does your dog have favourite activities. Is there anything your dog is scared of , reacts to. Food intolerances Are occasional treat allowed. Do you allow dogs on sofas etc.

A typical day

I love walking and playing ball….especially with a dog that actually brings the ball back . Hide and seek with small treats is especially popular

Availability

Basically I fit my day around the dog or dogs. I only work as a bank nurse now so can fit shifts around what I really want to do. I do like to go away for a few weeks / month in winter to volunteer at rescue centres abroad. My profile says I’m available from 11 am. , but it can be earlier. It’s just the option box to tick for availability was 6 am to 11am and 6 am is a bit too early
