I have had dogs since I was a small girl. I feel that dogs are better people. My dogs have saved my sanity. I enjoy their personalities. I love them all ! I have raised 3 boys to men and I find that dogs are like the boys, loving loyal need redirection and discipline and patience and a lot of cuddling and praise. We watch tv natural shows and cartoons. Time in the dog park if possible. I make homemade biscuits for them and I'm currently training a boxer pup 7 months old he knows sit ,down,speak,fetch,roll over, catches food in his mouth and we continue to work with him he sleeps with my 14year old and I sleep with my 2 small ones I am a disabled rn of 34 years. I find peace with them and they give more to me than I give to them I understand the concern you have about their care and safety
