I've been dog walking/pet sitting for a while now, and I love it. A walked dog is a happy dog. You can tell they need it and appreciate it everyday. My approach is calm, patient, consistent, and fun. If a dog has a lot of energy, then we'll kick it up a notch with lots of fetch and brisk walks. If it's an ol' lazy dog, maybe a shorter walk and some belly rubs are the ticket. A few things I try to keep in mind before working with any animal are safety (your dog's and my own), energy (are they calm, anxious, excited?), empathy (based on their energy state, what do they need?), knowledge (how do I give them what they need?), and structure (am I being consistent with caring for them?). And treats. We can't forget about treats.
