In the past I have watched my family's black lab at my house for months while they travel elsewhere. During this period the dog became like my own as I was fully responsible for its meals, walking, care, and even vet appointments. I had to use daily discipline and thoughtfulness to keep the dog's well-being a part of my normal schedule. It was an enjoyable experience and offered fun companionship. I enjoyed taking the dog for frequent walks on the river trail, local parks, and even some car-based travelling.
