Former medic, current animal-lover

Pet care experience

I worked on an ambulance in the 9-1-1 industry for 15 years, left the field in 2019, and moved from the Bay Area to LA in 2020 My timing wasn’t great, but no traffic meant lots of exploring! Because of my job, being gone for 16 to 72 hours at a time, I wasn’t able to foster dogs, but instead walked or ran dogs and fostered cats. I worked as a vet tech for about a year and a half in my early twenties (the first time I ever did CPR was on a Samoyed), and in my adult life have owned one dog and 4 cats (I currently only have a blind kitty that has been with me since 2007). I foster shelter dogs when I can-Especially the old guys. They suffer a lot being in the shelter so it’s nice to give them a better experience in a warm bed and peaceful environment. My mom owned a non-profit which took in abused and abandoned farm animals (horses, sheep, pigs, goats, etc), and we also had cats, dogs, & parrots. I have experience with "difficult" animals/behaviors: A Great Dane who stole food off the counters, a Goldie who growled at strangers and was food aggressive, etc. I have a talent for caring for these guys and helping to retrain bad behaviors. Having the opportunity to learn from an amazing vet, I use positive reinforcement and patience when I train and have found a lot of success with the techniques I use. I give my cat medications twice a day, and have a lot of experience medicating different breeds of animals. If you need doggy day care, and your doggo doesn’t do well with cats, I’ll usually go for long hikes or play time at a park. I have a 1,100 square foot apartment and a very large patio, so if they need to come home with me for an hour or so I can put my cat in one of my bedrooms to keep them separated. If your dog needs to stay overnight, I will accept them on a case-by-case basis. I hope to meet your lovely furry friends soon!

Amazing. Swooped in on a last minute emergency need and saved the day. She was there to administer difficult injection medications to one of our ill cats, but ALL the animals (and the pet/house sitters) loved her. Prompt and consistent communication, reliable, clearly very knowledgeable, and truly helped save our small getaway vacation. Thank you, Johanna!!

Johanna was super patient with my disabled dog and did her best to work with her temperamental issues. She provided really thorough updates and was very attentive to my dog’s special needs.

Johanna was professional, knowledgeable, and kept me well updated on my two kitties! One of them, Butter, wasn’t very nice to her, but she still made a constant effort to make Butter comfortable and make friends. (Butter is generally not very friendly with new people and is always suspicious.) Butter is also on daily medication, and Johanna did a great job of mixing it into her food and making sure she ate! Annie, my other cat, adored Johanna, and I have a feeling most *normal* pets (not Butter haha) would love her too!!

Safety, trust & environment

As I mentioned, I have a large apartment with an extremely large patio. Typically, when I am caring for dogs in my home or yours, I like to take them out every couple of hours. If the dog has full-time access to a yard in your home, I’ll typically take them for 2-3 walks depending on the health and age (or breed and outside temperature). If you have a puppy and are potty training, I typically do this every half-hour or hour depending on where they are in their potty training progress. I find that there are very few accidents when there are frequent trips outside.

Information Johanna M. would like to know about your pet

1. Does your dog have any allergies? 2. Does your dog have any behavioral issues or problems with certain people/places/things? Chewing/destructive behavior, or tend to eat non-food items? 3. What are your dog's favorite activities? 4. Tell me a little about your dog's personality. I’d love to get an idea of your pet from your perspective. 5. What training techniques do you use and what commands do they know? 6. Name & location of your vet and preferred emergency vet-This is required for all of my services.

A typical day

I am a runner, so if your dog likes to go on runs, I might take them on a hike or jog. If your dog is socialized and safe around other dogs, I might take a trip to the beach or a park. I personally stay away from dog parks. Since your dog doesn’t belong to me and I don’t know them well, I don’t trust other dogs in an off-leash situation. I'm always looking for new and fun places, and am happy to take your pet to areas you know they enjoy?

I currently work as a part-time, on-site property manager and don’t have set hours as I work from home. I also do handyman (or handyma’am, rather) jobs which can pull me away, but I’m not typically gone for more than a couple of hours. I don’t celebrate holidays, so I’m available for all of them🙂 Regarding overnight stays in your home, I will need to go back to mine twice a day to medicate my cat, and take overnight stays on a case-by-case basis. I like to run, and find quiet hiking spots to explore.
