20+ years teaching agility classes

Pet care experience

I am a positive trainer with 20+ years teaching competition agility and successfully trialing our own dogs. I also train and work our dogs in therapy work, nose work, obedience, barn hunt and herding. We have Australian Shepherds and Rat Terriers, all rescues, so I have experience with the quirks of the high energy herding breeds, the feisty terriers and dogs with special needs. I will be retiring soon from my job as a Medical Technologist in a busy Blood Bank and hope to enjoy that retirement by sharing my love for dogs. Dog safety has been a major focus in my classes and will be in my dog walking career as well. I am fussy about following rules and doing things the right way.

Joanne Schaus is a dog whisperer! She is a natural when it comes to dog care. She has studied dog behavior and health issues. She is our first choice when it comes to dog sitting. She will take great care of your dog.

Joanne has many years of dog owning and training experience with a variety of dog breeds. Joanne is meticulous and detail oriented which translates to attentive and loving care. She watched my dogs and I was very particular on who I would leave them with.

Joanne has the skills to train both dogs and people. She has worked with many breeds during her years of training agility and obedience. She brings a sense of calm with her confidence and abilities. Joanne has given back to her community Through her volunteer experience doing therapy dog visits. Joanne gives 100% of her self and will be an asset to any dog and family she works with.

When it comes to dogs Joanne is a natural! Joanne is one of the best dog trainers I know. She is very positive and upbeat along with calm and patient. I would trust Joanne to address every concern down to the last detail. All dogs just love her!

Information Joanne S. would like to know about your pet

I insist on meeting your dog so that your dog is comfy with me. Any food sensitivities or preferences for reward-based training. Any fears or reactivity. Verbal cues for trained behaviors. Leash walking issues, if any. Any touch sensitivities. The things that you love about your dog. The things you'd like changed about your dog, if anything.

A typical day

Walking routes will be at the owner's discretion, always on leash and always in safe areas. I believe dogs should be allowed to be dogs when they walk, sniffing for enrichment and interspersed with short, reward-based training such as sits, downs, touch, etc. I avoid dog-dog interactions on walks, changing our path to provide plenty of space between the dog I am walking and the strange dog. Activities in the owners fenced yard will also be at the owner's discretion and can include basic reward-based training.
