Cat Lady/Dog Kahu/Special Needs
Pet care experience
I use “Kahu” to describe us animal caretakers. (I don’t believe in calling ourselves “owners.”) “Kahu” comes from the Hawaiian culture and has many meanings, among them guardian, protector, steward and beloved. ❤️ I love dogs and cats more than people. I’ve been the token animal caretaker in my home since I was 9 years old. I grew up with an American bulldog (Justice), a bull mastiff (Libby), a bassett hound (Dopey) and two cats (Kitty and Spike). I have a young tortie named Kapika. She adopted me in 2021 after a brief encounter in the streets of DC. She has settled into her new homes (we moved) perfectly and is excited to have visitors. Before Kapika, I had my beloved Baby Cat of 13.5 years. He was the sweetest, chonkiest, most loving boy. He had diabetes for five years, which I effectively managed with insulin. He ultimately died of metastatic lung cancer after doing everything I could to help him with palliative care. I know how to care for elderly and sick pets, so I’ll be patient, affectionate, and attentive to your pet’s needs. I know what it’s like to love your pets more than anything and worry about leaving them alone or in another’s care. Rest assured that I would treat yours with the utmost love and care. Pets are family! Just think of me as the fun auntie who will spoil your fur child like my own. 😊 I work full time as an attorney (50/50 WFH + in office). For cats, that means I check in on them in the evenings Mon-Fri. (Weekends are more flexible.) For dogs, that means I spend all day with them when WFH but they will sometimes be left alone when going into the office or fulfilling other obligations. I fill out Rover cards for cat visits and take pictures. I’m very patient with cats who are more shy and timid and am usually successful at coaxing them out. If a cat gets in my lap, I literally won’t move until they do. I let dogs roam freely when I’m home and don’t mind if they sit on furniture. If I have to leave the apt, I’m happy to let them stay loose if they will not destroy things or crate them if you bring one. I have squeaky toys and treats here too. I have a cat who’s very social, so it is a requirement that dogs boarded in my home get along with cats.
Reviews
I trust Jillian with my cat as much as I trust close friends and family - and I am extremely protective of my cat, which is saying something! We are always happy to have her watch our Rose.
Always dependable and sweet to our cat.
Jillian is always so great when she watches my cats! She always sends good updates and plenty of photos of the kitties. 100% recommend her!
Jillian was wonderful as always!! We're repeat customers and I highly recommend her to anyone looking for a cat sitter. Really appreciate the care she takes of our two kitties while we're gone!

Information Jillian D. would like to know about your pet
Dogs: I would like to know if your dog has separation anxiety, if your dog will bark or cry if I leave the apartment, if your dog gets along with cats and dogs, if your dog chews household items, if they will eat cat food, and if they have any dietary restrictions. Cats: I would like to know if they will scratch or bite when being pet or played with, if they like (or don’t like) to be pet in certain spots or held, and if they will try to escape when I open the door.
A typical day
I have a fenced-in dog park within my gated apartment building that is very dog-friendly and a large grassy area outside the front of the building. We can go on walks near the waterfront or run around outside. There’s also a Safeway right across the street and a Petco in Navy Yard for me to get emergency food, treats or toys. I have taken people’s dogs on a 5K with me and also been a couch potato happily snuggling with dogs all day. I’m highly adaptable when it comes to your pooch.

Availability
I will spend the majority of the day with your pup if WFH but I do leave sometimes for other cat visits, errands, events, gym, etc. I tend to visit cats in the evening after work because that's easiest with my schedule.
