Pet care experience
Hey, Im Jewel! Most of my life revolves around dogs. I can often be found petting them, walking them, training them and talking to them. I currently have 2 dogs; a yellow lab named Zoro and a golden retriever; Keeper. I am a positive reinforcement dog trainer as well as Dogsafe Certified (canine first aid). Almost every job i’ve had has been about dogs. Ive worked at a busy dog kennel, 2 different pet stores, dog walked/overnight sat, and pack-hiked up to 14 dogs at a time. I have also raised 5 puppies for the Lions Foundation of Canada Dog Guides. This entails attending classes, teaching them basic skills and familiarizing them with the world. I then worked for the foundation where I taught the classes and assisted fosters with the training of the puppies. Each job, course & volunteer experience has taught me so much about dogs. I strongly believe in forming an equal relationship with these furry friends, using only positive reinforcement & force free methods. I have had to trust strangers with my dog so I understand how scary it can be. I always encourage a meet & greet with you and your dog, so we can make sure its a good fit and you can tell me all about their likes, dislikes, routine and behaviour! I currently offer boarding in my home! As well as both virtual and in person dog training. (see my website for more info: www. befriendyourdog. com) When boarding & walking your dog, I focus on enriching their experience.. with lots of sniffing, exploring, and taking in all the sights and sounds of the world. I often get "whos walking who?!" when I walk my dogs, and I happily say the dog is walking me. Because this time IS about them, and FOR them. I look forward to meeting you and your dog!
Reviews

Haku had a great time over the weekend at Jewel’s where he spent time at the lake and river! She kept me updated and sent pics each day - He was stressed at first so thank you Jewel for being patient and helping him settle in. Hopefully we will see you again!

Jewel was absolutely amazing with my foster pups, Sweets! She was so accommodating with any changes that I threw her way. She is unbelievable with dogs and has extensive training that makes her more than equipped to deal with any issues that may arise. Sweets adored her & her two pups. I highly recommend Jewel for any of your pup needs!

Jewel is wonderful! We are so grateful for her and will definitely be using her services again. I highly recommend her to anyone. Our dog was so well cared for and we received picture and video updates. Thanks, Jewel!

When coming to your home, I will be sure to follow any guidelines you provide me for your dog. Whether they are crated, in a specific room or free to roam, I will make sure to safely retrieve & return them. When out walking, I keep all dogs safely secure to either their standard leash, or a long line for more freedom. I encourage all dogs to have harnesses to avoid harm to their neck should they pull or lunge. I always carry a pet-first aid kit should anything happen away from home. As well as water & plenty of treats to reward them for any and all good choices.

Information Jewel K. would like to know about your pet
Please inform me if your dog has any specific triggers, ie. other dogs, squirrels, strangers..etc. This will help me, help them have a better walk/hike. A few other must knows: - Is your dog allergic to anything? - Do they have a history of eating things they shouldn't? (ie. animal stool, sticks, rocks..) - How often do they come when called?
A typical day
A typical walk will start by first getting acquainted. This looks like giving a few treats, practicing name recognition, and playing with a toy and/or lots of pets (depending what you're dog likes). I usually like to let the dog choose which way to go, given it's a safe choice. I will switch between letting them sniff, and practicing a bit of loose leash walking. The combination of sniffing & learning is very mentally stimulating! Each walk really does differ depending on the dog. Is your dog reactive towards other dogs? Each walk will be focused on keeping distance from other dogs, while slowly building a positive association with them with treats & praise.

I currently work from home, and live on a lake with access to beautiful moss covered trails! I always put the dogs first, getting them out first thing in the morning, feeding them, and enjoying each others company. I fit in two walks a day, plus engaged playtime and of course, lots of pets and cuddles!
