9+ years of Rover experience!

Pet care experience

*** COVID-19 UPDATE: I am fully vaccinated and boosted! I will continue to wear a KN95 mask while in your home at all times. Please let me know if there are any additional precautions you’d like me to take! *** NEW SERVICE: I now offer 60-minute enrichment walks for dogs! If your dog has been cooped up in quarantine and is getting restless, a long walk full of sights, sounds, and especially smells will engage their brain and body. We’ll keep a loose leash and go at your dog’s pace, following wherever their interest leads us-- a suburban hike right in your neighborhood. This type of walk is a great way to supplement your dog’s standard exercise routine! Adding at least one long walk per week can build confidence and muscle tone, promote deeper sleep, and ease anxiety, while also improving the process and effects of any training you’re working on. Your dog will love the exercise and leisurely exploration; you’ll love how happy and calm they are afterwards! As a kid in Ohio, most of my interests revolved around animals, and of course my dream job was to be a veterinarian-- I’ve always wanted to take care of pets! I grew up pet sitting for various friends and family, and I spent countless childhood Saturdays volunteering at my local Humane Society. After a few memorable experiences in successfully recovering stray dogs and cats here in Portland, I decided to lean in and share my strengths and enthusiasm. I became a trained volunteer at The Pixie Project, walking dogs, working in the kennels, and giving one-on-one personal attention to the dogs who needed it most. From there, I joined Rover to pursue pet care further, and I’m looking to get certification for dog training in the future. I LOVE meeting new animals, learning their names, and discovering their idiosyncrasies! I'm especially good with shy or anxious animals; I can be as patient and gentle as they need until they come out of their shell. I've also worked with senior pets, blind and deaf pets, and pets recovering from surgery, tailoring my approach to their specific needs. Animals who are skittish and untouchable around others often become calm and cuddly with me! * If you would like longer visits than the usual 30-60 minutes, please ask! I’m open to arranging longer visits as my schedule allows. * I currently provide Dog Walking and Drop-In Visits ONLY; I do not offer overnight House Sitting at this time. * If you don't feel comfortable bringing a copy of your house key to our Meet & Greet for any reason, that's okay! We can either make arrangements for me to pick up the key from a concealed place outside your house on my first visit, or you can drop off your keys in my home mailbox at your convenience. Alternatively, I can come by your home on a separate key-pickup visit; a separate visit will have an additional $5 fee. * Holiday rates will apply to the following dates, per Rover, with an additional cost of $10/visit: Memorial Day weekend 4th of July (July 3rd to July 5th) Labor Day weekend Thanksgiving (3 days before & 3 days after) Winter holidays: December 18th to January 3rd I will ALWAYS require a public Meet & Greet before confirming a booking with a new client. Pick your favorite nearby coffee shop, and I'll meet you there! Please bring your dog(s) with you, so we can all get to know each other and see if we're a good fit. Be sure to allow at least 30 minutes in your schedule, giving us plenty of time to chat, get to know each other, and establish what you and your pet will need. For safety reasons, please do not expect me to enter your home during our Meet & Greet!

Safety, trust & environment

While on a walk with your dog, I’m never scrolling on my phone or listening to music. Instead, I’m constantly scanning to maintain my situational awareness. I keep a careful eye out for nearby people, cars/bikes/skateboards, dogs (including off-leash pets and strays), cats, squirrels and birds, food or other "edibles" (poop, roadkill, etc.), as well as broken glass, spilled chemicals, or other hazards. If your dog is sniffing something, I’m always watching closely to see what it is and what they do with it; if they manage to pick up something they shouldn’t, I will attempt to retrieve it immediately. (I’ve recovered dozens of foreign objects from curious dog mouths, including rotten bones, bits of plastic and foil, and even bottle caps!) Out of respect for your neighborhood, I do my best to make sure your dog isn’t peeing on anyone's decorative plants, and I will always pick up your dog’s poop and dispose of it responsibly. I take my role as your pet's guardian very seriously. I will be your pet's vocal advocate and defender as needed, and I carry pepper spray for protection. I am experienced with various unexpected crises; my immediate reaction is always to ensure your pet's safety and well-being, and I will of course notify you ASAP if anything unusual happens during a visit. In working with all animals, I ONLY use positive reinforcement techniques: verbal praise, kind touch, play, and treat rewards. I will never yell, intimidate, or use force to address unwanted behavior. I'm constantly researching science-based training methods to improve my skill set and provide the best support for your pet. Building a relationship of mutual trust is proven to be safer, more effective, and more humane than an outdated reliance on punishment, fear, or "alpha dominance". If your dog is unable to go for walks without constant pulling, I will not be the right fit for you, as I have a chronic pain condition that tends to flare up after walking very strong pullers. Additionally, if your dog is unable to go for walks without using aversive tools to "manage" their pulling (prong collars, choke chains, shock/e-collars, or similar), I will not be the right fit for you. I strongly encourage you to find a force-free trainer to help your dog master their leash basics without using aversive options! NOTE: After a visit, I may sometimes share a picture of your happy pet on my social media to help boost my business. I'm always careful to edit out any collar tag info, and I aim for neutral backgrounds to protect your privacy. If you'd rather I not share any pictures of your pet at all, just let me know!

Information Jess S. would like to know about your pet

Before any visits, I'd like to know everything you can offer about your pet's temperament, behavior, and preferences. Do they have any reactivity or anxiety issues? What sorts of situations can trigger them, and what helps calm them? Do they get along with strangers, dogs, cats, children? Do they have any favorites or special needs for food, toys, or routine? Are there any training issues that you're currently working on? We can talk more about all these things during our Meet & Greet! I have no breed restrictions-- I adore everything from pit bulls to chihuahuas, as well as mixes and mutts of every size and shape, and I have a big soft spot for senior pets. I also love cats, rats, and other pocket pets, so I'd be happy to care for any non-dog animals you might have as well!

A typical day

When I'm with your pets, their care and comfort are my top priority, and they'll have my full attention at their disposal. If they need long walks in the park to stretch their legs, or if they want an engaging game of indoor fetch to ease their boredom, or if they just like to nap on the couch with gentle cuddles after a quick backyard pit stop, all of those preferences can be easily met.
