I had a yellow lab for 12 yrs. Magz had a strong personality, which I consider a head-strong dog. I learned to just be patient. Taking my dog for a walk everyday helped to work out her energy. About a year after Magz past away, I adopted another yellow lab Ellie. She was accustomed to being crated all day but now she enjoys her doggie door and access to outdoors anytime she pleases. I've watched my friends' dogs both at my house and have stopped by their home to care for pets. I like to stay as close to the dog's routine as much as possible to lessen the stress on the dog. I have attended a session on learning dog body language which has aided me in preventing being bitten by a dog. Respect a dog's signals to give them space; don't bother them when they're eating. Currently, I am willing to go to the pet's home but I'm not ready to board again. My new dog was evaluated by a dog trainer who said my dog displayed fear-based training from her original owners. So, my work is to help Ellie get socialized. Therefore, I will ease into additional services once I feel another dog would not be viewed as a threat to my dog in my home.
