The Doge Palace: A True Pet Resort
Pet care experience
Our dogs are the most important beings in our lives. We want to share our oasis with other small dogs. Our goal is to have an animal sanctuary with many kinds of animals, but we are starting with small dogs in our home. We have two small loving dogs, Button, a 7 year-old Lhasa Apso, and Bow, a 5 year-old Daschapoo. Our dogs have their own nursery, and our canine guests will stay next door in their own space. We have a beautiful garden the dogs will have continual access to, as well as two walks a day--one a longer adventure to Chabot Park, the beach, or a comparable change of scenery. We have always been very stressed about leaving our dogs when we go away, and all the commercial pet resorts seem to be glorified kennels: noisy, spartan, overwhelming, incommensurately expensive for what they offer. We are new to hosting canine guests; the Doge Palace is brand new, so we will only be taking one small dog at a time and keeping our initial rates artificially below market rate. Your dog needs to be trained not to pee or poo in the house and be accustomed to spending time with other dogs. Our guests will sleep in their own bed nestled near our own dogs. In the future, half of the proceeds will be donated to the East Bay SPCA to provide assistance to people who cannot afford veterinary care and Nobody's Perfekt Dogs and Cats Rescue for disabled or elderly dogs. At the moment, we want to help the many abandoned pets in Ukraine, so we will be sending contributions there and to Poland where pets of refugees are in need of help. Jeffrey routinely does pro-bono work through his college counseling company for the SPCA--his regular rates are paid for through a direct donation to the SPCA by the client. We want to grow these donations by contributing half of what we make to two animal care organizations and the rest to our dream of having an animal sanctuary. We have a dedicated dog nursery where they can play, a beautiful large fenced-in, quiet garden oasis, and plenty of toys. The dogs get to get out half a dozen times a day for potty breaks and to enjoy themselves outside. We take them out on a walk at noon and in the early evening. Our canine guests will get a one hour-long outing to a park or beach. Robert is a biotech executive that works from home three days a week, and Jeffrey is a professor who works at home all the time. There will always be somebody home and when we leave the house for more than a couple hours, we bring the dogs with us.
Reviews

Jeffrey and Robert are ideal caregivers for our dog Chase! They are reliable, attentive, communicative and warm with pups and humans alike. When we’re on one of our human breaks, it’s wonderful to know Chase is having his own spa-time at their idyllic doggie villa, lounging in their gorgeous, expansive yard or being taken on multiple daily walks around town. I also really appreciate that they’ve come through for me at the last minute when I’ve suddenly needed a sitter. You can’t go wrong with this wonderful pair of dog-lovers. Happy repeat customer here!

Thank you Jeffrey and Robert for giving Andy a little spa vacation while I was having my little vacation. You were very reliable and caring especially for an old guy like my Andy.

Thank you so much for taking such good care of Nola and being available relatively last minute. We appreciate you!

Jeffrey and Robert took great care of Ty. This is the second time Ty was there. He is now 15 and he had an upset stomach after I left. They fed him chicken and rice and Ty got better quickly. They also sent a lot of pictures. I highly recommend them.

Information Jeffrey & Robert W. would like to know about your pet
We have nursed our own senior dogs in the past through chemotherapy, pancreatic disease, surgeries, and teeth cleanings. We have administered pills, drops, and ointments, and cut out holes in the back of diapers when they became incontinent. There is nothing we have not done when it comes to dog care. If you want your pet groomed, we have someone who is good and extremely reasonable. She does grooming for $50 for our Lhasa Apso, plus we leave a $10 tip. We can take your dog over if you want him or her groomed.
A typical day
Wake up, go outside to the garden and play. Button takes her balls and squeak toys outside for everybody to play. Breakfast for dogs who eat in the morning. Noon: we go out for an excursion to a neighboring sanctuary park, not a boring flat dog park. There we can get out in nature by the lake or the bay or up in the hills. Afternoon, we work outside in the garden, in our home office, or in the home library, which has plenty of mats for the dogs. We go out periodically to garden and the dogs come out with us. Evening: dinner. Evening walk Bedtime: We'll say prayers for your dog and kiss them good night. Button likes to make her little munchkin noises before she goes to bed.
