I love Helping Fur Babies be Happy

Pet care experience

My family had a Pekinese for 14 years. I would let her out of her kennel in the mornings and afternoons and coax her outside. Sometimes, during the winter, she would not go outside without a sweater, so I would gently pull the sweater over her head and gently pull her paws through the leg sleeves. I would be sure to check that she had water in her bowls. I would also dump water into the sink and refill them when they were low. Whenever I got home, I would give her a treat after she was done outside. When she was playful, I would convince her to do tricks for treats, each successful trick earned her a treat. Whenever I tried to teach her a new trick, I would reward her with a treat with any behavior or movement close to the new trick until she would get it down. I have also looked after my neighbor's cats and dogs. I would go to their house 3 times a day and check water levels in bowls. I would let their pitbull mix and corgi mix out to the backyard for potty breaks and play with them by throwing toys talking to and petting them. At mealtime, I would coax one dog outside and feed one of them a specified amount of food, as the corgi would bully the other out of her food. Then, I would coax the fed dog outside and the other one inside for food. For their cats, I would make sure they had fresh water, a clean litter box, take the waste out to the trash, add litter when necessary, their food bowl was full and would talk to them, play with and pet them when they wanted attention. I've also taken care of my aunts two cats. They are very skittish, so I would move slowly and talk to them softly in a friendly voice. I made sure their water bowls were filled with fresh water, that they ate in the morning and at night before bed with specified amounts of food for each meal. I would talk to them, play with them, and when they wanted me to, pet them.

Information Jaymie S. would like to know about your pet

Some things I would like to know about the dog would be: How does he/she react or act around familiar or new and strange pets or animals? How does he/she react or act around familiar people and strangers? If I can give he/she treats, what kind can I give and how many/much? What are some behaviors or quirks that the dog does that means something specific? Does the dog need some kind of training or practice doing something, and if so what is it? Is there anything I should stay away from or not bring with me while caring for your dog? Your dog's safety is important to me.

A typical day

We would walk around the block several times, or walk to the nearest park and exercise there by walking and exploring the smells, sounds and sights. If we are near the black belt, we may walk down that towards Legacy park. If the dog likes to play fetch, I will bring a fetch toy with me that is an appropriate size for the dog (ball, tug rope, cloth/squeaker chew toy). I would also bring treats that have been okayed by the owner to give to the dog as rewards. The owner also chooses the number of treats I can give. I will bring water with me for the dog to drink while we are out. When the dog starts to slow down a bit, we will turn around and head back home. It is no good over tiring a dog with exercise. For drop-ins or house sitting, I would make sure all water bowls are filled with fresh water, that dogs are let outside whether freely in the backyard when available or on a leash for a walk. I will be sure that they get to go potty when they need to and play with them as much as possible (approved treats included). For drop-ins or house-sitting for cats, I will make sure they receive attention and play when they they want it, that they have fresh water to drink and they eat the amount of food they are allowed to. I will clean their litter box and fill with more litter when needed and when I am approved to do so.
