I have around 18 years of being around and taking care of dogs. As a child, I took every opportunity to sleep over my aunt’s house so I could spend time with her dog (we couldn’t have our own at home due to allergies). She would take me to the humane society every weekend to volunteer to walk dogs and help out at adoption events. As a teenager, I would often pet sit for teachers and neighbours. My love for animals has been a constant throughout my life. During the pandemic, my roommate and I began fostering dogs. Up to this point, I’ve fostered 7 dogs; each different ages, backgrounds, levels of reactivity, breeds, and sizes. The most meaningful foster (aside from the 13 year old Chihuahua Terrier who we ended up adopting) was a Black Lab Chow Chow mix who was scared and reactive when we first got her. She was skittish and would bark at the mere sight of another dog. By the end of her time with us, she was playful, cuddly, and enjoying hikes with her new dog friends! It’s my favourite testament of how rewarding and special it is to spend time with animals, especially when you take the time to learn and understand their needs. As a senior dog owner, I am familiar with providing specialised care (my pup has her own daily eye drops and medication). I’m a quick learner, so if your pet has any special quirks, I can adapt to their needs!
