Positive reinforcement trainer!

Pet care experience

Hello there! My name is Jade, and I am a positive reinforcement-based dog trainer, walker and pet sitter. I've worked professionally with dogs for the past seven years, and before that worked on behavior modification and obedience with my personal dog as well as the four other dogs in the house at the time. I'm very familiar with administering oral meds, have experience with senior dogs, and I have a special love for fearful and reactive dogs. My method of interacting with dogs relies on fun, low-stress, kind solutions for behavior difficulties as well as general interaction. I primarily use a clicker, good treats, toys, and lots of praise to tweak little behavior issues. I put an emphasis on mental enrichment and stimulation when watching others' dogs, and have a blast teaching dogs to use new puzzles, play new games, and learn new tricks (with their human's permission, of course!) On walks, I generally do a blend of walks, decompression (sniffing and exploring the world to relieve stress) and basic training. Heavy pullers aren't a problem as I'm very skilled in teaching leash skills, and learning often tires dogs out just as much as long walks. Most recently, I've worked at a puppy training facility in San Francisco, where my duties revolved around giving puppies a good start in life by teaching manners, potty training, crate training, and a fun trick or two. Puppies under my care have an emphasis put on age-appropriate and safe socialization, which is worth its weight in gold later on and helps dogs to grow up feeling confident and secure. Reactive dogs do very well in my care, as I'm well versed in how to stay away from their triggers and make walks as enjoyable as possible for us both. For repeat clients, I'm happy to build a training plan into their sessions with me. I ask that all dogs be walked on a harness, and if you don't have one, I can bring one with me to fit to your individual dog. For dogs who are flight risks, especially fearful, or headshy of harnesses, please provide a martingale/limited slip collar. I ask that all choke, prong, or e-collars be hung up and left home for my walking, day visit, and sitting appointments. I also have experience with a variety of other pets! In addition to dogs and cats, I have had pet rats, mice, snakes, birds, and a rabbit, and I have sitter experience with chickens, hamsters, and guinea pigs. I currently have pet rats of my own, and taking care of any small pets in the house can be added for no extra charge. I'm getting back into the swing of taking regular training clients outside Rover, so my schedule is very flexible right now! I can make most dates and times work. I'm happy to abide any feeding schedules, medication schedules, etc. I'm happy to abide any and all safety precautions already in place, such as provided barriers to the kitchen for counter surfing, baby gates to prevent eating foreign objects when alone, and crating when home alone. I do not let client dogs off-leash in unfenced areas, so I have both a 33ft and a 50ft long line which we use for open areas to get out more energy. I also ask that all dogs have a walking harness as well as a collar with current tags. The leash will be attached to both their harness and the collar as a backup, just in case. If your dog is particularly gear-shy with harnesses, we can work something else out, or try one of my harnesses to see if a neck buckle makes it less scary. :)

Jade is ALWAYS on the alert to reinforce good behaviour in a dog, thus she is always training and our dog and our family get the benefits. Our dog is excited to see her and we are relieved that she is caring for our dog. She’s on-time, she sends photos and quick messages and responds to our questions.

Jade is pretty awesome. We were so relieved to find her here on Rover! She is obviously experienced at dealing with, training and calming dogs. We have a dog who is anxious, reactive and a “handful”, he even needs sedating before he goes to the vet??. She stayed at our place with our dog. The house was as we left it, dog was confidently and carefully looked after and she accommodated our unique situation very calmly. She was consistent in her communications with us, sent awesome photos and caught up with us each day we were away. We have already booked her again.

Information Jade H. would like to know about your pet

If your pet has any behavioral issues, including reactivity (barking at people/dogs/anything else), anxiety, resource guarding (also called food/toy aggression) or any other behavior that you think I might need to be cautious of, I would like to know in advance to prepare myself. Any necessary precautions before walking (ie., muzzles) would also be helpful. I often bring treats along, so please tell me if you would prefer me not to feed treat or if your dog has any allergies. If the dog has food allergies but would still like treats, I'll see if I can find something that fits into the allergy requirements (with owner approval, of course!)

A typical day

I stay local to the dog's home, but when house sitting I bring things like food puzzles and games to stimulate their brain and make things more fun! Most walks are a blend of manners minding (for dogs without many leash manners) and decompression (sniffy time) with more robust exercise either at home, fenced park, or on a long line.
