I'll gladly run with your dog!

Pet care experience

Having grown up with dogs I've spent the better part of my 30 years caring and playing with these furry friends, whether my own or others, in some capacity. Recently, I have been the resident dog-sitter for multiple friends over the last 5 years upon my move to St. George from Southern California. Most of these dogs have been in the medium to medium/large build (Labs, Golden Retrievers, German/Australian Shepherds, Huskies and Hounds) though I currently also live with a rambunctious Pomeranian. As an active outdoorsman and runner/climber athlete who struggles sitting still inside for very long I've found the numerous dogs I've lived with/dog-sat to be great companions for exploring the parks and trail systems of this area. I consider myself incredibly patient, have worked in wilderness therapy with adolescents for ~2.5 years as well as having volunteered many hours at Best Friends Animal Sanctuary as well as with local rescue shelters. The experience working with these programs has demonstrated how valuable play, focused attention and holding boundaries is to the health and wellness of both people and dogs. I am currently practicing massage as a graduate student, L.M.T. at Z.M.C. and will gladly give your furry friend some hands on love if they'll appreciate it. Availability: I'll be in class from 9 AM - 1 PM Monday through Friday with clinical rotations Wednesday-Friday until 5pm and can be free to check up on your friend(s) within the hour of getting out of class. Clinical hours will also fluctuate as the year progresses so I'll be more then sometimes less available in the mid afternoon hours. I am a trained EMT and feel confident in my ability to identify/act in the face of an emergency but I do not have any formal Canine First Aid training. Feel free to contact me about any specific skills you are curious about.

Our dogs absolutely love Ian. When he shows up at the house we have no choice but to consider him family. The dogs have no problem with us leaving when he is there and so we have no concerns leaving our home. He carries with him a calm and warm demeanor validated by trust. We have had him watching our home and dogs for years and couldn't be happier.

Ian has watched Juneau, my 9 year old pit mix, on many occasions. Ian played with Juneau, took her on lengthy walks, and made sure that she was always comfortable and happy. Ian has always been considerate of my property when watching my house, and always kept my house clean. Ian is a great guy and is my preferred sitter for my beautiful pet.

I recommend Ian with the highest regards. He has helped take care of my bluetick coonhound on and off over the past few years, and has always treated my pup as if she were his own! Ian is playfully attentive and active with her, dependable with her daily medication and eating schedule, and has even surprised me with having bathed her a handful of times. A dog owner would be hard pressed to find a more loving, attentive, active and responsible young man to care for their four-legged kids!

Ian Smith is dog/cat sitter (companion) extraordinaire! He has cared for my German Shepherd and several of my cats for extended periods of time, and they love him to death! Ian will get down on their level to play and cuddle, and anytime he shows up, Loki, my German Shepherd, is excited to see him and raring to go on a walk! Ian is ready to communicate if anything comes up that he questions, and he is very responsible for following directions that I've left about my animals daily routine. I would not hesitate to recommend Ian Smith to care for your pet

Information Ian S. would like to know about your pet

I have no breed preferences. I would appreciate knowing how much exercise each dog prefers, how they get along with other dogs as well any quirks they may have about eating their food, being on a leash, etc.

A typical day

I enjoy going to Chuckawalla, Cove Trail head and a nearby climbing area called Moes Valley (SW end of Dixie Drive near Green Valley Gap) for runs or walks. I also will bring dogs who enjoy fetch to any of the nearby parks to toss frisbees or tennis balls while I get some stretching in. At home I will lightly rough-house with dogs who enjoy the playfulness of it or just relax on the ground with them while watching a movie, reading or doing homework. Once I have developed exceptional trust/rapport with the dogs I care for and know that they will listen to me when I make a request (which has taken anywhere from a few weeks to a few months) I feel comfortable with them off leash during our runs/walks if their owners feel comfortable with this and we're in an appropriate space to do so.
