Pet care experience
Hi all! I’m Hannah – I’m a behavioral ecologist at UWM and I’m excited to get to know your pet more! Currently, I have a handful of exotic animals (frogs & lizards) and my two Belgian Shepherds. I’ve loved a variety of animals my entire life and have been working with both dogs and exotics in a professional sense for over five years, but I have experience with animals from every corner of the world! As a pet sitter, I have an unwavering commitment to providing exceptional care and personalized attention to each pet I look after. I understand that every pet is unique and has specific needs, which is why I go the extra mile to tailor my services to their individual requirements. One of my special skills is dog training and dog management. I take great pride in helping dogs learn essential manners via positive reinforcement and communication. I have experience with high energy, high drive dogs and have learned how to successfully manage these dogs so they have appropriate outlets and stimulation. Additionally, I have been working with reactive dogs for the last four years – my journey started with my own reactive dog, who has taught me everything I’ve learned. I have a love for animal behavior and a very clear understanding of animal communication and this allows for great relationships between myself and my clients. Beyond these skills, I'm a firm believer in open communication with pet owners. I keep them updated with regular messages and photos, giving them peace of mind knowing their beloved pets are in safe and capable hands. My goal is to create a positive and comfortable pet care experience for both pets and their owners.

Hannah is one of my co-workers and certainly knows everything there is to know about dogs. She has multiple sport-training dogs herself, and also has experience working at a pet store hosting dog-training classes. Not only is she well-versed in dog training, she clearly loves all dogs she meets (including my own!). She is also a very responsible human in day-to-day life, and I trust that she would commit to any appointments she'd accept.
As a pet professional of over seven years myself, Hannah is one of the select few I would completely trust with my pets. She has fantastic communication and attention to detail when it comes to animal husbandry. I have known her for five years in which she has cared for not only my pets, but my roommate's as well. I live out of state now but would not hesitate to literally fly my dog to her to pay for boarding if the need ever arose.

Safety, trust & environment
Whether caring for pets in my home or a client's home, safety, trust, and providing a secure environment are my top priorities. The specific approach varies depending on the service I offer: In My Home: Safe Space: In my home, I create a pet-friendly environment where hazards are minimized. This includes securing potentially toxic substances, removing choking hazards, and ensuring any other potential dangers are out of reach. I designate pet-proofed areas of my home where pets can play and rest comfortably, keeping them separate from any areas with potential risks. I do have my own dogs and my roommate's dogs in my house, but client dogs will not interact with either. Supervision: I maintain constant supervision, especially with new or younger pets. This prevents accidents and ensures their well-being. Proper Containment: If necessary, I use secure crates or enclosures to keep pets safe during times when I can't be present, always ensuring they have ample space to move and access to water. Client Updates: I keep pet owners informed with regular updates, photos, and videos to establish trust and reassure them that their pets are in good hands. In the Client's Home: Familiarity: I familiarize myself with the layout of the client's home and any specific pet-related safety concerns. I maintain constant supervision of the pets, ensuring their safety and providing companionship. I will always take extra care when entering and exiting the client's home to prevent pets from escaping. Scheduled Activities: I adhere to the pet's usual routines as closely as possible, including feeding, playtime, and bathroom breaks. Emergency Plans: I am prepared for emergencies, with knowledge of nearby veterinary clinics and contact information, as well as an understanding of what to do in case of a pet's injury or illness. Respect for Client's Property: I treat the client's home and belongings with the utmost respect and care, maintaining a clean and organized environment. In both cases, establishing trust with the pet and their owners is a priority. Regular communication, clear expectations, and providing a loving and safe environment help ensure a positive and secure pet care experience.

Information Hannah W. would like to know about your pet
Let me know ahead of time if your animals have special needs, especially if they have time-sensitive medications. I strive to make sure that my schedule allows me to commit to special-needs animals. All breeds are welcome! I have a lot of experience with higher drive dogs (think: German Shepherds, Belgian Shepherds, Border Collies, etc) but I love working with any and all breeds. Additionally, I am also a pet photographer - if you would like portraits of your dogs during your stay, reach out! For more examples, check out my site here: https://double-q-photography.square.site
A typical day
A typical day while caring for the dogs I watch is filled with a balance of fun, exercise, and relaxation. The specific activities and places I take them for walks may vary based on the dog's needs and preferences, as well as the owner's instructions, but here's a general outline: I start the day early to greet the dogs and let them out for their morning bathroom break. Morning play sessions may include a game of fetch, tug-of-war, or interactive toys to get their energy flowing, but it vastly depends on the dog’s personal preference. For dogs that benefit from training or mental stimulation, we engage in short training sessions to reinforce good behavior and commands. Dogs need exercise and I know a lot of ways for them to get that physical stimulation! I have some favorite local trails and parks with beautiful scenery, and I choose the one that suits the dog's energy level. I do not bring dogs to dog parks, but we do have several dog-friendly parks around for a leashed adventure! For some dogs, it might be a leisurely stroll around the neighborhood, while for others, it could be a brisk hike or a visit to a dog-friendly beach or park.

Pet care is a crucial and integrated part of my daily routine. I prioritize the well-being and happiness of the pets under my care, and I ensure that their needs are met consistently. I am a part-time employee at the University of Wisconsin, so I have a very flexible schedule. Here's how pet care fits into my daily and weekly schedule: Daily Routine: Morning: I start my day with the pets' morning routine, including feeding, bathroom breaks, and exercise. For dogs, this often involves a morning walk to stretch their legs and get some fresh air, as well as time to play and get all their energy out. Throughout the Day: I provide regular check-ins and playtime sessions, ensuring the pets remain engaged and happy. This might include interactive toys, training, or simply cuddle time, depending on their preferences. Meal Times: I adhere to the pets' feeding schedule, making sure they receive the right portions of food at the right times. Medication Administration: If any pets require medication, I administer it as prescribed, following a strict schedule and keeping detailed records. Evening: I conclude the day with another round of exercise, play, and bathroom breaks, ensuring the pets are relaxed and content before bedtime.
