I own 2 dogs and 1 cat currently myself and have always owned at least 1 dog. Many family members and family friends rely on me when they need pet sitters for any variation of time (even before using rover). I’ve taken care of puppies and older dogs alike in the time I’ve owned pets and taken care of other species of animals since starting working with rover. I have experience administering oral medications as well as experience with reactive dogs.

I have 1 very energetic 1 year old that I run and play with daily, I have an older chocolate Labrador that requires more affection than physical play time. When it comes to my clients I generally I ask for a daily schedule they usually follow for their own pets whether it’s medications they need to take, allergies or just basic feeding times that they have.

I prefer to know the type of dog I’m going to be caring for, breed, temperament, age, and things like that. This helps so I have a rough idea of how this dog is going to act and how I should be prepared to approach this client and their pet
A typical day
While taking care of previous clients pets I’ve taken them for runs and given them time to sniff interesting sent between running. I generally take my own dogs for walks in a bigger neighborhood that is close by, it gives them training with dealing with other dogs as well as the chance to explore in a safe manner. I also have many mentally stimulating toys at home that I would use at a clients request, along with fetch or tug-of-war. Of course this depends on the dog, if it’s an older low energy puppy I might just work with treats and doing basic commands with verbal and physical affection to encourage the good behavior
