Pet care is an integral part of my day. Having a hyperactive dog like Leia keeps me on my toes and encourages me to continue to educate myself so I can be the best pet parent for her. My boyfriend Anthony and I work hard, daily, to work on our communication skills with each other and Leia so we can navigate situations where she is highly stimulated or needs extra attention. We are very conscious of the patience that dealing with a dog like her entails and we are continuously working with her trainer to best ensure that she is making positive steps forward. Leia has a structured routine, daily rituals that really help her thrive and be calm. She requires calm energy and to be met with confidence and patience. Her day starts with how she comes out of her crate from sleeping. She gets really excited to see us and smiles, we open her crate and give her treats to lay there until she is calm to step out. Sometimes the treats aren't necessary and she just stays and watches us get ready! Then we put her collar on, and she goes out to the bathroom. She comes in for breakfast and waits patiently until her cue--where she devours her food. She LOVES to eat. We tell her 'place' and she lays on her bed and watches us have coffee and chews her bone. She eventually falls asleep, and we start our work days. We work remotely, so she gets lots of together time. Around 11 am I take her for a short walk, she stretches and makes all her funky noises and then I bring her in place her in the crate with a bone. She chews for a bit and sleeps while I do all my photography! I do product photography for 6 brands. At the end of the work day, Leia goes on a nice walk, gets some constructive training time/exercise and we practice her leash work and reactivity because she gets really excited about small animals and other dogs. Some days its manageable, others it is a lot and she doesn't make it on the full walk. She has her dinner and relaxes with us 'in place' with her bones until we go to sleep. She is incredibly house trained, never has accidents and goes to the door to tell us she has to go out. If we are watching tv, she sits in front of the TV. She gets zoomies when the whether cools and we need to rangle her or she will sneak getting away from you while you pick up her poop. Leia tests me daily. As someone with high anxiety, I struggle having such a hyper and reactive dog. She is a massive ball of love, very sweet and loving and may be one of the happiest dogs I have every met. We use the tools above to help her have a routine so she feels like she knows what is expected of her--otherwise she gets scatter brained and anxious and will prance around the apartment to every window and rev herself up to a point of hysteria. She will calm with time, and aging, but we love her. She is worth its and we rescued her with no intention of giving up so this is what a day looks like for us and I am to be diligent, loving and patient with your pet in the same way.
